IMSA Applicant Class of 2020

Hi, @xjayy13 . I just did a quick Google search, and I found their website: http://il.8to18.com/imsa. They do offer a bunch of sports for you to choose from. Also, I don’t think joining teams from your old school would work, as depending on how far your high school is from IMSA the drive could take hours, and with the frequency of practice and games for average high school teams, the whole affair becomes ridiculously time-consuming. But unless you specialize in bike polo, I think IMSA will cover your athletic needs adequately.

True, but what if someone was in football, wrestling, badminton, lacrosse, (field) hockey, water polo, etc. I go to a naperville school and they offer a lot more sports then IMSA. Personally, Im on varsity lacrosse and I’m just wondering that since my school is located within half an hour if I could continue playing on my schools team, assuming if im going to imsa? @romalex4

Hi I am applying to imsa this year and I have a question for any current students. How well and how often does imsa allow you to use places like in2 for your own ideas and projects? Do they allow you to use those kinds of resources whenever, or is it heavily regulated? Also, do you have enough time to work on your own ideas or are you too swamped with current homework and studies to even worry about anything else?

@themathgeek that’s a really good question, I’m interested to see what the current students say

@xjayy13 I highly doubt that they would allow you to continue playing sports at Naperville, even if those sports weren’t offered at IMSA. Logistically, since IMSA presumable starts later than Naperville (I think school starts at 8:10 or 8:15 AM versus 7:45 at a normal school), it already ends half an hour later, and if you add half hour driving, you’re basically missing an hour of practice already, which the coach might not tolerate. In addition, leagues depend on people attending the schools they are playing for, which is a rule for most leagues, and so if you’re playing a varsity sport and you actually make it into finals or something, there’s a risk that if anyone found out you go to a different school, the team would be disqualified. Again, I don’t think the coach would take that risk. The rules could be different for lacrosse, but I’ve never heard of a case where someone was allowed to play for a team of a school they don’t attend. I mean, there are some home-schooled kids in my area, but the school didn’t even allow them to be on the school’s track team, for the reason that it would cause problems if the other schools found out they weren’t students there. I understand that you want to continue with a sport you are good at, but I just don’t think it’ll happen. I think the only thing that you could try to do is that (at least in my area) they have travel club sports, which are extracurricular leagues that don’t correspond to a particular school, and I think you’d certainly be allowed into one of those. I really hope that it all works out for you, and it sucks that IMSA doesn’t offer the sport you’re looking for.

Hey, applicants of 2020! If anybody here is planning on going to IMSA Summer Research Training Program (SRTP), the six-week residential program?

@themathgeek I’m a current sophomore, and the IN2 staff love it when we come in with our ideas!! They will let you use whatever resources you need(within reason) and help you out whenever!

@kristin1501 thanks. How much free time do you have to actually go to in2 with all your class work to do?

@javascript I just went and looked it up, and it looks really cool, but alas, the deadline has already passed. Are you going?

@corrjayna Yes, I applied in time and I got invited yesterday. Just trying to put together $6000 … to pay for this program… It was $10 000 for out of state applicants… so, $6 000 sounds less than $10 000 $-)

@corrjayna also, I got a couple job offers for the summer … (lifeguarding… :> ) so, I am debating with myself what is better: to gain money with little future perspectives or to loose money with possible more future perspectives (however unpredictable)…

@themathgeek Depending on the day, and what we’re doing in classes, it varies. I have a really full schedule this semester so I don’t have lots of time to now, but first semester I had plenty of time to go in there!!

Crazy to think that now probably over half of us have been decided. Do you ever think about how by now people have actually looked over our cases and reviewed us? I don’t even know how I will react when I get the letter, even before I open it. I will like be really happy or really scared.

@balloony You seems like thinking too much about something you can not influence anymore! It is like a path to loose your mind… Do something that will help you stay healthy and happy no matter what…
I took a lifeguarding training over last weekend, which sucked all of my Friday, Saturday and Sunday and was a totally different experience. I had so much fun and a huge amount of adrenalin in my blood! I feel good that I can save lives now! Also I got job offers, so some positives in case I do not get accepted…

Do not let yourself down by thinking constantly: what if I do not get accepted, what would be envelope size if I get accepted, [-O< …what is my chance versus other applicants… how many applicants could be…
It is just one week left, you have a very good application and I believe in you, so believe in yourself too
<:-P

Results are coming May 1st and I heard a lot got accepted :stuck_out_tongue:

@caressmytoenails are they going to be sent on May 1 or will they arrive on May 1?

@XxSwegLordxX Sent on May 1

@javascript haha thank you! I’m stressing out maybe a little too much but you’re right, it’s only one more week. I will just focus on studying more. Congrats on the lifeguarding class! That’s so cool.

@carressmytoenails

How do you know “a lot got accepted”? I’m all ears! Also, did a lot of people apply this year? Perhaps I should just wait, but we all have our own ways of dealing with things!

Hi everyone! Current senior here who has an in with admissions :wink: All decisions were finalized last Friday and I’m expecting all decisions to arrive by or on May 1st, but at the very latest they will mail them on May 1st. I believe they’ve already been sent out, but no promises! @balloony

For sports at your old high school, IMSA will allow it so long as you keep your grades up. Something to consider is a mandatory leadership class every Tuesday night 8-9:30pm. I know of a girl who was training to be a ballerina and went home for classes/lessons but I’m not sure what the sports league rules are for that. I also know someone who goes home and is in their old school’s marching band. Look into it, but it’s very difficult to have any large time commitments off campus.

This year, if my math is correct, there should be a much larger class than usual. I can’t disclose how many applications were received but normally we accept ~250 and this year I want to say it’s around 265. @carressmytoenails @TheNewmanry

IN2 used to be only for special projects but now it’s open to students at all times, even just to work on homework. The idea baristas love to have students come in with ideas or new projects they want to start. They’ll be thrilled you visit! @themathgeek

@imsachick Wao, you are giving me too much hope!!! :-SS
