Omg guys i can’t believe that this is actually real life!! I got in!! This is not real this is not real this is not real…
I have a question- how do we find research opportunities there? And how do we get internships? I feel like i dont know the connections to those connections
@complacent1 Don’t worry. IMSA will help you find opportunities for research and internship through SIR office and IN2. IMSA offers many resources. Students who actively seek help will benefit most from IMSA education.
@complacent1 congratulations!! i can’t wait to see you in the fall!
@mochi12 thank you for responding! I appreciate it.
@brinaz03 thank you, you too! I’m so excited to meet all of you guys!!
Let’s all meet at the placement tests :DDDD
Congratulations to everyone who got invited to the academy! I’m a filthy weeb and epic gamer, and I’d like to get to know some people before the school year. If anyone’s interested in chatting, feel free to add me on discord @Gitgudm9#0801

@hopeforbest5 congrats!! that’s amazing!
to anyone on this forum, i’m a girl from a small town in north central illinois and i’m looking for people to potentially room with or just friends to chat with before the upcoming school year. dm me if you wanna talk and i’d be more than happy to talk to you:) can’t wait to see y’all in the fall!!
hey guys! congrats on getting in, I’m a current sophomore and our board about admissions definitely helped clear stuff up for me so I’ll try to answer questions:
Hall placing is very random your sophomore year, and requests are rarely listened to. There are some students who need certain halls for religious or allergy reasons, but aside from that I’m pretty sure they don’t take requests. On your housing form you indicate a preference for co-ed (01 = best hall!!) or single sex housing though.
College admission rates aren’t as simple as they seem. Yes, only a couple dozen kids go to top ten schools from IMSA - but not that many apply. The CACs here are great, and they’ll help you figure out what schools you’re likely to get in to AND afford AND be interested in. When you look at the data sheets for how many students went to each school, look at how many applied too. Also, colleges do know about IMSA and it will look good on your transcript - as long as you keep up good grades and ecs and other aspects of a good applicant.
For the placement test - DO NOT STUDY. Review information for courses you’ve already taken but do NOT try to learn anything new. Getting placed higher than you truly should’ve been can be really detrimental to your success at IMSA, and sophomore year already has some hard adjustments. Do your best, but be honest about what you know because the test is truly to help you succeed at IMSA
also last year our class found that groupme was actually a really good platform for big groupchats so I’d suggest one of y’all make one and send the join link to the google hangouts and discord! you can also pm me if you have any specific questions or anything like that
@7bean3 Thanks for the tips! That was really helpful
Hello! Current Junior/rising Senior here and I would like to say that first of all, I agree with 7bean3 to some degree - IMSA does look good on your transcript in that there are just so many more opportunities and stuff, but do realize that you are competing against other IMSA students when you apply. So point being, do not just come to IMSA to be a college wh*re. It will not work for you. You have to stand out against other IMSA students (who are overachievers mind you).
As for @complacent1 question on how to get research, IMSA doesn’t really do much for you except for providing a bus to chicago every wednesday, but do realize that generally speaking, anyone who wants an SIR can find one, you just have to be willing to be persistent and keep emailing people. As for internships, there’s a lot more hand-holding in that they have an internship open house where they bring in employers that are looking for interns and you go network with them. Speaking as someone who’s had both an SIR and an internship through IMSA, it’s honestly not difficult if you are proactive and go out seeking opportunities.
Excited to see you all in the fall!
I just want to point out that the current juniors’ SIR experiences may not be typical due to the awkward resignation of the former SIR director last summer. It’s not fair to say that what IMSA does for SIR students is only providing transportation to the research locations. The SIR office does provide a list of possible research mentors and help students know how to contact researchers etc. SIR can be done off-campus or on-campus. Applying to some prestigious organizations for SIR can be very selective, but one doesn’t have to go to such places to learn to do research, which should be the real purpose of the SIR program.
Agree with the above post saying that one should not come to IMSA for the sake of admissions to elite colleges. One should come for an education not available in local high schools.
@Tandoorhut where did your friend hear that only 40 kids where waitpooled?
To any IMSA kids rn or incoming sophomores - I’m taking the survey right now and it’s asking for “other course #1” but I haven’t taken another additional course, so I put N/A down, but when it asks for the grade level, there isn’t an N/A option. Am I doing something wrong or should I put down a random grade level?
@BL1234 I am not sure where my friend heard that 40 kids were waitpooled, but I will ask him tomorrow and let you know.
@7bean3 Do you have any information on waitpool statistics? Like how many people who are placed on the waitlist, eventually, get accepted?
I think there is around 40 people wait listed (20 girls and 20 boys), but apparently a lot of people are thinking of rejecting IMSA so wait list people do have a good chance.
@VIVION Thanks for the information! Hopefully waitlisted appliants have a good chance for acceptance.
