@CactusLord12 I would suggest trying to join extracurriculars that are related to each other and something that you are passionate about, as a way to shape a unique but impressive aspect of your application
@CactusLord12 also, what were your subscores for the SAT? Imsa does say it’s mostly dependant on your math subscore, but a 1490 could have a lot of different subscore combinations
@theonesun333 thank you! But Now im really worried ~X(
@cactuslord12 You don’t have to be good at math club or any other extracurricular activities, just show that you are interesting and that you like to get involved
@7bean3 720 writing and 770 math
also i’m not really passionate about much, and most clubs have already started, and it would be really confusing joining them almost mid-year
@wickedstar1390 I can join my school’s chess club, but I can’t really think of what else I can join that I will actually know what to do. Do you have any recommendations of what kind of clubs I should join that would help me the most?
Is it true that IMSA only looks at the grades of math, science, and language arts and other classes such as social studies?
Let me reword my previous post, is it true that IMSA only looks at math, science, and language arts and NOT other classes like social studies?
I really have been wanting to get into IMSA since forever but this past year I had a really bad depressive episode that resulted in some pretty bad grades and a low gpa. Currently I have a 3.6 do I have any chance?? My SAT score is a 1200 and I’m pretty involved in school activities like Jazz band, girls who code, and debate team.
Hey guys! Can any imsa students or any other people analyze my stats?
Race: Chinese
Area: Central Illinois,
Gender: Female
Grade: 9th
I think my GPA is gonna be like a 3.9 or 3.8. The semester isn’t over, but I’ll probably have two B+'s overall in my semester grade, in Biology and Algebra 2. This is what I’m most nervous about, because I don’t have a 4.0, and it’s in a math class and a science class. I think my teacher recomendations will be good though, because the main reason why for those grades is because I rush too much, and I hope the teachers recognize that.
Extracurriculars I’m putting on the application:
Robotics FTC manager
Chess club/team
Mathcounts
Volleyball
Orchestra
Awards I’m putting (only 3 I think)
4th Individual Illinois All State Tournament
1st Place Chapter Team in chapter Mathcounts Competition and State qualifier
2nd place in State for 7th grade IESA State Tournament
SAT: 1370
I’m not too great at writing essays, but hopefully I pull through. I have two brothers who currently attend IMSA, and about 15 people from my school are applying.
Also is it just me or is anyone else slightly embarrassed to ask teachers for recommendations? I feel like they might judge me and think I’m not good enough. Does anyone have tips on how to ask for recs? thanks lol
Is it true that IMSA only looks at math, science, and language arts and NOT other classes like social studies?
lmao nobody is replying but basically they calculate gpa by using your past 5 math, science, and English grades. They don’t use other classes when finding gpa but that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t look at those grades
@lynn1212 thx for answering
I also had another question: Do any of you know by any chance if IMSA takes a look at teacher comments from a report card on the transcript, or is the transcript just grades
Hello, I am aspiring student looking to get in to IMSA and would like to understand my chances considering the following:

Also created website in 2-3rd grade to collect money for hunger and homeless and donated $$$ to an institution in 4th grade.
@itachiweeb465 I do not know exactly what to tell you, if your teacher recs and sat are strong they will usually overlook grades, however your SAT isn’t the strongest but isn’t bad, I think you have overall not a guaranteed but a pretty good chance of getting in, your sats will be the turning point, just do your best
@lynn1212 you seem fine, lots of kids with terrible grades and sts have gotten in if they have good essays and sad stories, I know that sounds stupid but that’s how it is, play on the unique and sadder parts of your life, admissions like that
@hopeforbest5 you seem fine and look like you will get in
for transcripts, IMSA just looks at the pure grades of English, Math, and Science, nothing else
P.S. I am a current IMSA sophomore
Hey All,
I commented a little while before about the placement test, and I’d like to know more. Specifically in Math, how does it work? Is it pencil and paper, what types of questions are on it the most, how long is it, etc. I am trying to improve my math skills as much as I can so that I can get placed into MI4 or even BC series. Please help me out. Thanks in advance.
I have A’s in science all through middle school, but now I have a C in Biology! What would you guys say my chances are?
but we have finals this week so I will have to see
I got a C on my biology final, but an A on my trig final
do I still have much of a chance of getting in, especially without much that makes me unique?
