hmmmmmm…were u in thilk, linden, or truemper?

Is it okay if our essays are over the 500-word limit? I find it hard to fit everything I want to say in with 500 words or less.
You could do above 500 but I would do under 500. Also, what if I had a low GPA because I was in a honors program? Like honestly, out of three classes (math, science, english) * 10 quarters I got the following. That means out of thirty classes they will look at.
I got 24 A’s, 3 A-'s, 1 B+, 1 B-, and 1 C. Do you think I get in, because I have very good extracurriculars, awards, essays, and teacher recs? I put that into a grade point calculator, with each class worth one credit (b/c IMSA does that), and got a 3.83. I’m also in Joliet, which might pose a potential problem.
@ TheAdmitted1
You’re still in the highest tier of GPA, so I would worry as much about GPA. According to an Alumni on Quora, IMSA is “desperate” for students… Now, I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing, but if you have good ECs and essays, I wouldn’t worry. However, Joliet might be a problem, but nothing concerning, at least in my opinion. I don’t know what your “Very good” standards are, but if they are decent (winning regional STEM-related activities), then I wouldn’t worry. However, that B- and C, might be a big concern. If you’re getting a C or a low B in normal, public high school honors classes, your GPA in normal IMSA Classes (probably much more work load) might be concerning.
@ Cuplove26
Also, make sure you get it in 500 words. If you’re having trouble fitting everything, try to summarize and cut out any wordiness.
i’d say being concise in what you say is a valuable skill, so try to get it under 500. i have trouble with it too, but having somebody else look over and give suggestions for my essay really helped in both wordcount and ideas. if anything, you could give it to me to run it over, if you’re comfortable. i have my essays done and application submitted so don’t worry about me taking any of your ideas lol.
I also explained why I had those low grades which don’t reflect my perfect GPA in the other years. It was a personal reason, so I won’t share it here, but just saying.
Bruh, if you have national awards, I would worry about Joliet. I’m actually worried about myself, because I only have 4 regionals awards in math and robotics, along with multiple speech and some school awards… I’ve also been all online this year, so my teachers don’t know me that well, but I put a healthy mix of my previous year teachers, who loved me.
Also, I just wanted to say that it’s harder for eight grade applicants. I’m not sure where that places me, even though I won nationally and at a state level. Like with an okay GPA, but the rest of application is good, but a very competitive environment, I’m not sure if I can get in. Someone in 2022 said that 10/150 eight graders get in. I’m from Joliet, and that makes everything just worse.
Not saying it's bad or anything, but why do people apply in 8th grade? I mean, you're already top of your class, so why not feed on the full advantage and take the extra year to study and become ahead even more, instead of skipping one grade and having to be in a disadvantageous situation?
Also, @TheAdmitted1, you are correct. According to the admissions profile of the class of 2022 (two years before us), 113 8th graders applied, and only 13 got accepted. I'm sure that there were many more qualified, rejected 8th graders than some of the accepted 9th graders, but with national awards, I think you are a strong candidate. I found this somewhere on Reddit....
Also, not sure if it really matters, but I was also Varsity Track team for 3 years, and Varsity Cross Country in 8th grade
i think you have a good chance. having a sister who got in can prove an advantage as you personally know alumni. but then again… i think that her chances against yours might be a bit different (for getting in).
(you also always have next year to apply, so don’t sweat it! i think the odds are about right, as the focus is letting in ninth graders who won’t have a chance to apply again. just try your best, your stats are good, there’s always next year.)
@TheAdmitted1 also, i’ve heard that it can be tough for eighth graders to skip their introduction year into hs (freshman year) and immediately be forced into sophomore. keep these things in mind, don’t get too ahead of yourself either.
Hello everyone. I am a rising freshman that lives in Aurora. My grades for 7th and 8th grade are straight As. This year I got an A in Honors Geometry, an A in honors English, and an A- in honors Bio this year. My SAT score is 1360. My ECs are mathletes and student council. My essays are strong and teacher recs are strong. I talk about why I am only in 2 after school clubs because of COVID in the optional statement. I have taken an honors java course and honors Algebra 2 course from Northwestern University and both are As. I have also taken a website development class by Duke University and that grade is also A. I am currently taking a python course from Georgia Institute of Technology. I have taken 2 IMSA STEM League courses earning a certificate of completion for one and a certificate of completion with distinction for another. I have included these online courses as part of my ECs. I have won the Principals award from 8th grade and have won 5 awards from mathletes this year including a contest champion. My other awards include one religious award and social studies award. What do you guys think my chances of getting in are?
First of all, I have no idea what you mean by mathletes… Do you mean MATHCOUNTS? If not, there is a very big difference. Also, I think you have a very good chance. You’ve definitely shown that you’re smart and interested in STEM. I think that including some things about leadership, hobbies, community service, etc. would be good as well, just to give more mix instead of just academic achievements.
For the activities section, do we describe what we did in those activities, or just the name, dates, and leadership position held?
Just the name, dates, time spent in activity each week, and leadership roles
Thanks for the advice. By mathletes I did not mean mathcounts. Mathletes is a club that competes with other schools in the region in math contests.
