In all honesty, is RIT hard to get into?

RIT is my top choice right now because I am very interested in it's co-op program. I've heard that it's not too difficult to get into, but I'm also aware that it is a very rigorous school and I will have to dedicate myself if I get accepted and I attend. Truthfully, my grades aren't that stellar (85%, not sure what the point-GPA equivalent is, 1890 superscored SAT), but I go to a pretty rigorous HS and I feel college-ready. I plan on applying to the Comp Sci major. I realize that all colleges view an individual as a whole, so ECs and essays will matter, but is RIT truly hard to get into as it claims it is?

Depends on the specific major to which you’re applying. Engineering and possibly computer sci. would be more competitive. Other majors are not. You can get an idea by searching through their web-site for the page that shows the typical mid-50%tile SAT/ACT sores of admitted students by individual schools (eg. Eng., Business, etc.) and get a relative idea from that. My S who is applying to the Mech. Eng. program was told at a summer info. session that that dept. has only an 8% admit rate. On the application they ask you to name your top 3 choices of majors and apparently from what I’ve heard/read, it is not uncommon for them to admit you into your 2nd or 3rd choice making the overalll chance of getting into RIT not that difficult, but it may not be the exact program you want and then you would need to find out what the process/requirements are for transferring programs within the school at some point. There may not be any guarantees on this and it could involve loss of time as well. Anyone else have thoughts on all of this?

You’re grades aren’t bad. Engineering programs are the hardest to get into. CS is competitive just by the sheer number of applicants they get. They have to be picky just to keep the student body reasonable. I think your grades are pretty good for RIT. 1890 is a decent SAT score, although it might depend on what your math portion is. 85% is also not a bad high school average. Just FYI, a 4-point GPA scale is just an averaging of the letter grades you get in each class, where A is a 4, B is a 3, etc. So an 85 is generally a 3.5 GPA.

I think RIT has a reputation as a tough school because people here get involved in a lot of things because there’s a lot of great things to get involved in, and there’s not a huge party scene so people just don’t blow things off as much as some other colleges. I don’t have much of a perspective though, because I haven’t gone anywhere else.
