Example: Switching from a major in a college of arts and sciences to a college of engineering

I'm pretty sure I'm set on my major, but assuming I DO lose interest, would be hard to switch. I have heard that it is hard to do this at someone schools (Berkeley). Would there be some type of high school prerequisite necessary in terms of SAT scores or something?

There will be a gpa requirement to transfer into engineering major for sure.

Ah, I see. And typically, if I wanted to major in engineering, would I have to take any core classes my freshman year?

at some colleges it is easy. However at the UC schools it is almost impossible to switch into engineering because there is so much demand for the major.

However some of the UCs such as UCLA allow you to switch if you would have been admitted applying from HS, provided you switch first quarter frosh year. See HSSEAS OASA | Change of Major You'll have to check what other UCs allow this if you're interested.

At the University of Arizona, it's incredibly easy to switch majors.

It depends on the school, but some engineering majors will have pre-requisite chains that could be 8 semesters long. So yes, you would have to take core classes your freshman year if you plan on graduating in 4 years.

like everyone else said, it varies by school.

at some schools, it's actually easier to switch INTO engineering because generally speaking, more people want out of engineering than into engineering once they take a few weedout classes. coming out of HS engineering is a popular choice but so many of those kids don't realize what kind of courseload they're getting themselves into so they change majors to something outside of Engineering.

Depends on the school and major. Some schools you can just go into the student advisement office and sign a change of major form. Some schools you have to be accepted into the program. There may also be a time limit on when you can transfer. I'm sure it's probably a little easier if you transfer before 60 hrs than afterwards.

ya it definitely depends on the major and school. you shouldnt have much trouble switching from liberal arts to engineering in most schools.
