I'm only a junior in high school, but I have already thought a lot about being a MT major in college and what it would be like. I really want to join the club swim team when I get to college but I am wondering if it would be difficult to do so, since in some circumstances the schedules might intervene with each other. My main question is this: if one is in a show, when do rehearsals take place? at night? and how often?

I can’t speak for any other schools, but at Coastal we typically rehearse Sunday-Thursday, 6-10 on the weekdays and 2-8 (Straight 6) on Sundays. I feel like this could be pretty normal for a lot of BFA programs, but I can’t promise that. I’m sure more people will chime in and we can find a good time range. :)

D was in two shows. Rehearsals 6:30 to 10:30 Monday through Friday. Saturdays 4 hours (varied depending on what was going on). But typically Saturdays were 10-2 or 11-3 or 12 to 4. No Sunday rehearsals.

I agree with previous two posters, those are pretty typical rehearsal schedules. Rehearsals might vary a bit school to school , director to director, and show to show. Another factor might be what role you are playing. However, to answer your main question - if you are in a production, it is pretty much going to take most of the time you would have for other co= or extra-curricular activities. If the activity your involved with is on a club level - they might be able to work around the seven or so weeks of your production schedule. Also, some schools make a policy of having one or two days a week “off” ( except, possibly, for the actual tech week) - this might allow another activity to be possible.

Where I teach rehearsals are M-F evening from 6:30PM - 10:30PM (some variation in start and end times depending on the director) and either Saturday or Sunday for 4 - 6 hours (schedule specifics depending on the director).

Once the show is in technical and dress rehearsals the hours tend to be longer in the evenings and on weekends.

If the club team travels and competes it may be difficult to make the competition schedule work with rehearsal schedules. It will likely vary a bit from school to school or team to team.

At Hartt we rehearse Monday-Friday evenings from 7-10:30 (occasionally with some variance depending on what needs to be done. On Saturdays we rehearse from 11-4, and Sundays are our day off.

At Syracuse, rehearsals for mainstage productions take place in the evenings Tuesday through Friday, and in the daytime Saturday and Sunday. No rehearsals are scheduled on Mondays. Daytimes are pretty full with classes, leaving a window of an hour or two between classes and rehearsals.

My son is finishing up his Freshman year and even though he was not cast in a show this year he still has rehearsals many nights and weekend afternoons for his performance classes, dance classes and senior directing scenes that he is in. He cant even imagine the time comitment of being cast in a show!! I think MT majors are busy even if they are not in a show.

At Muhlenberg the main stage shows rehearsed from 7-10, but the many smaller shows and student groups rehearse at strange hours. I know my D used to have rehearsals that could go to midnight or later.

thanks everyone, your responses were really helpful!
