In general, which has a better chance of admission: EA or EDII?

Hello,

I’m planning on applying ED to Cornell. But I’ve been looking into UChicago and I see that they have an EA,EDI, and EDII option. If I’m looking at this right, I could apply ED to Cornell and apply either EA to UChicago, or EDII because by the time the application for EDII is due, I’ll know whether or not I’ve been accepted into Cornell.

Anyways, I’m speaking in general terms here… do more students get accepted EA, or do more get accepted in EDII?

Most definitely ED2 gives a huge advantage over EA. The acceptance rate between the two is stark.

Didn’t Cornell release ED decisions already ?

If you were deferred or rejected, EDII last year had the highest acceptance rates (based on the extremely limited unofficial data inferred)

I’m talking about this coming year, lol. I’m still a Junior… Trying to explore all my options!

Yes, EDII allows for an ED/SCEA application to another University and EDII submittal at uChicago pending outcome.

Good luck.

Thanks for the thoughts! Does anyone know of admission statistics for EDII and/or EA? It seems like it’s hard to find the statistics for this

“Anyways, I’m speaking in general terms here… do more students get accepted EA, or do more get accepted in EDII?”

UChicago doesn’t publish these numbers, but it’s likely that more got into EDII than EA for Class of 2021. It’s too early to know anything for the class of 2022. ED/EDII were only offered beginning last year.

“Does anyone know of admission statistics for EDII and/or EA? It seems like it’s hard to find the statistics for this”

Last year was the inaugural year for ED/EDII so I wouldn’t go off any implied stats that are floating around. Keep an eye on what you are reading about this year’s admission statistics as that’s bound to be more representative than what happened last year.

However, whether you increase your odds by double, triple, or 10X, you should only apply ED / EDII if UChicago is your first choice and you would attend if admitted. It is a binding commitment. If you are accepted EDII at UChicago you will need to pull your application at Cornell, regardless of whether you would have gotten in.

Thanks for all the insight! I knew the ED/EDII were new at UChicago but I didn’t know they were that new.
As of right now my primary goal is to apply ED to Cornell. It’s my dream school, so I definitely will be. But since I would know whether I get in ED in mid December, if I get rejected I will have a week or two to submit the EDII application to UChicago before the January deadline. UChicago would be my number one school if I’m rejected/deferred from Cornell (forever hoping I’m not, lol!)

Of course this is all subject to change by application time in November/beyond, but Cornell’s been my number one since freshman year and I’ve always loved UChicago as well, I just never thought about applying because of the extremely low acceptance rate. However I think it’s worth a shot, especially since there’s no application fee!

@astromae2001 your strategy sounds pretty sensible to place Cornell as absolute #1 and UChicago as a close runner up in the event you believe Plan A isn’t going to work out. Given the ever-larger percentage of the class consisting of early admits (Harvard looks to pass 50% this year . . . ), RD becomes more of a crapshoot. Good luck!
