Yeah im sure people have posted this before so i apologize if this is being repetitive.

Im sure most of us who are seniors in college situations are aggravated with our parents for different reasons. So mine was my mom telling me a few months ago.."just apply dont worry about the money, we will be able to deal with it"

anyways long story short. I had a feeling money would come up and now ive gone forth with 2 schools: Fordham U, which is going to put us in debt and cost a lot of money, and CUNY Hunter College (city school) that is not going to put me any any debt but i doubt there quality of education.

I am from N.Y and my brother and friends all went to cuny...when i see them now...honestly they arent really doing anything. Though not to sound cocky, there grades were to no extent comparable to mine GPA and SAT wise (though my sats are not even that great), im doubting if i can get into a medical school from CUNY. I told hunter im going, and i paid my downpayment for Fordham just incase i cant go there (the reason for me telling hunter im going)

What should i do? Im afraid the internships/research opportunities and class sizes at Hunter will destroy me. Im not sure what to do...and im also getting bribes from my parents that if i do go to hunter ...i can get "whatever" i want, meaning laptop, car etc... I am commuting at every school and there is not really much financial from Fordham, so at Fordham im looking to pay around 28k per year, and at Hunter im lookin at most likely 2k per year..

what should i do? what would you guys do? take the prestige and risk debt and pay it off later....or go with the cheaper school hope for the best and take the "bling"

I would say... go with CUNY for now...
If you are very comfortable with your academic performance there, you could probably work a part time job while being a full-time student and earn money possibly for the next year's tuition. Then after a year or two or even three, you can try to transfer out. I'm sure Fordham takes several transfer students from CUNY each year considering their locations. Just an idea...

yeah but its like, a job wont really help me pay for it you know? its like either i have to stay at CUNY or take the chance at Fordham, with the possibility of getting help with scholarships offered next year for freshman undergrads...i dont know what i should do.

I am not sure how much additional money you are talking about, but I would go with Fordham even if you have to take out loans. Fordham will make itself affordable for you. Fordham is a much better school.

ok Fordham is about 34k per year....with scholarships that i have lets say i end up paying about 28k per year....we would need about...a 15-20k loan per year.

as oppose to Hunter where i would not have to pay that much, only a few grand per year and possibly only for the first year i hear they give deparmental scholarships.

yeah ofcourse Fordham is better but the thing is i feel like taking out the loans might bankrupt my family or something. I will probably graduate with over 65 or 70k debt.

Remember that medical school is expensive. If you can't afford Fordham now, how will you afford med school? And if you spend all your money now on Fordham, and take out all these loans, what will be left for med school?

What's the point of getting into med school from Fordham if you can't pay for it?

(And yes, with the right motivation and work ethic, one can get into medical school from CUNY.)

can you tell me any heavy disadvantages i should/ CAN prepare for in advance? i already know about shadowing and stuff which is something i plan on doing from freshman year. ill still look into other programs that are beneficial and look good on an application for med school.

so basically like the big disadvantages of going to CUNY over Fordham, another thing i do fear is big ass class sizes.

How about attending CUNY for at least the first 2 years? If you do really well and still do not like it, you can apply apply for transfer to Fordham. You would only have 2 years of Fordham's higher tuition.

yeah but i dont think the credits would transfer do u? because i have CUNY college credits and there not being very cooperative in terms of accepting them. I just fear that i wont be able to get a good education (considering my highschool did not prepare me that well imo) and wont get into any med-school or a "health professional" school

Fordham is a much more academically enriching environment than CUNY hunter and i think it has a good med school placement rate (I know someone who graduated Fordham college and went on to Columbia Med School). I would pick Fordham.

You should ask your parents how much debt you will be in upon graduation if you go to Fordham. Don't play guessing games; ask how much they can contribute each year. The difference between what the family will pay and what the college costs is your debt per year and then you have to take into account interest that will have accrued in the meantime.

well the thing is we can pay it off its just going to be very hard. there plan is, since with scholarships with it will be about..around 28k.

were going to pay off 13k straight from saved money.(per year this is) and the rest 15k put it on the 10 month payment plan fordham offers and pay it off monthly. I mean my concern is were going to have to cut back on many expenses i guess we have that we kind of need, and it will be rough living...is it really worth it?

btw i just found out hunter offers B.A degrees for bio chem physics......i dont know why...and that makes me not want to go there even more just when i started thinking it might not be so bad.
