Hi! I finally have all my search criteria sorted out, so I'm into the picking colleges stage. I'm a junior so I'm kind of behind, but it has been a chore picking out what I want in a college! :) I want a liberal arts college or small university good in anthropology, English, and the natural sciences (maybe marine science too). Location isn't very important, but I would like to stay on the east coast. The atmosphere is very important to me. :) I would rather have a school where kids talk about things they learned or play cranium than get drunk. That's exaggerating, but you know what I mean. I would also like colleges that offer housing for all four years and are suburban (no rural or big city colleges for me!). Are there many schools that fit this? What about Bowdoin? I've been reading about it, and I like it a lot.

Here's a website listing all anthropology departments --- might be a good starting point.

While I understand you're limiting your search to colleges in the Northeast, Beloit College in Wisconsin has one of the best anthropology departments at a liberal arts college, and sends more grads on to doctoral programs in raw numbers than any other LAC in the country. It also meets all of your other requirements. Here's some information about their program: http://www.beloit.edu/%7Epubaff/releases/05-06/0506anthropology.htm

In any case, you might want to look at Beloit's program, and their facilities, as a baseline for evaluating and comparing programs at LACs in the northeast. In the northeast, strong programs besides Bowdoin include:
Barnard, Smith, Brandeis, Bryn Mawr, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Lafayette, UPEnn, Rutgers, Skidmore, ST. Mary's College of Maryland, Uof Rhode Island, U of Pittsburgh, Yale. Other programs outside the northeast to check out: Rice, Vanderbilt, UMichigan, Washington U St. Louis, Pomona, University of the South, Stanford, U of Arizona, U of Colorado, U of Maryland, U of Wisconsin, U of New Mexico, Macalester, Grinnell. Like with Beloit, look at what these schools offer as a baseline for evaluating options. Good luck!

Thank you!!!

Here are some rankings of graduate programs, but they suggest where some top faculty might be found. There are some surprises on the list from the northeast, might be worth investigating.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Have you looked at Duke? It's not a LAC, but it's fairly small. Anthropology is fairly strong, and we have UNC Chapel Hill nearby with a great anthropology department. The sciences are strong, and Duke has a marine lab on the coast. Davidson also might be worth looking into, if you're adamant about LACs. The College of the Atlantic in Maine also might interest you.

I pretty sure UNC-Wilmington has a marine biology program, and cost-wise it is less than duke or davidson but if that isn't an issue than of course they are both great options.
