In shock from FA package: denial of UC Blue & Gold

In a bit of shock right now, as one UC denied the Blue and Gold, stating that our assets were over their (unstated) threshold. Our income falls well below the $70K threshold, but it seems that assets were over the amount.

Our assets are mostly in student accounts: 2 UGMA accounts for each of our kids, 2 529s for each of our kids. Did we make a mistake in counting our daughter's accounts when filing the FAFSA? (It is our son that will be the freshman.)

What is interesting is that another UC gave us the Blue and Gold. How can we qualify for one and be denied by another?

Is there any chance for an appeal? Any suggestions? We are a bit devastated right now.

You would not include the value of your daughter’s UGMA on your son’s FAFSA. You would typically include both 529s as parent assets if they’re regular 529s (ie ones that could have their beneficiary changed).

Does this help?

We did just as you mentioned.

I guess the question is why we would be denied a Blue and Gold at all. According to the website, it is based on income only.

Turns out that each school has the perogative to determine how it decided eligibility of Blue and Gold?
