In-State Chances

Hey everyone! I’m currently a junior at a top prep school from Chapel Hill, NC. I’m wondering what my chances would be getting into UNC-Chapel Hill, without FA. I’m the head of a medium-sized club related to philosophy and government, am fluent in three languages, have an A- GPA (My school has a weirdly scaled GPA range), and a 34 ACT. I’ve already taken various history and religion courses, am currently in APUSH and plan on taking advanced social science classes related to existentialism, capitalism, and anthropology in my senior year. I’m also planning on interning in a government or public health office in my senior spring. Where should I rank UNC on my list? What are my chances EA vs RD?

Definitely make sure to apply EA rather than RD, as the chances are historically better EA. Your ACT is absolutely right in the range to feel good, I wouldn’t bother taking it again for UNC purposes. The GPA is a little harder to know, but since you’re in Chapel Hill it is likely that the UNC admissions office will be familiar with their system, A- average is probably enough, but see what you can do to push that as high as possible. You are going to need to have 5-8 AP classes (or IB equivalent) by graduation to hit that mark for them, they publicly say they only need 5, but I’ve heard in-state guidance counselors say that the target number should be 8. Also make sure to start working on your essays this summer when the prompts are available. Essays are a big part of it, so don’t wait until the last minute and crank out something shoddy. Overall you seem like you’re on the right track, good luck!

As an alum and my S being a UNC Chapel Hill jr, I can tell you the 2 most important factors in general are 1) test scores 2) strength of curriculum. You can confirm this by googling the following: UNC Chapel Hill admissions common data set.

This term/link will allow you to see the document published by the admissions department on the latest admitted class to CH. In the document, you will find a matrix/table listing the factors for admission (gpa, sports, first gen, etc…) and whether the factor is very important, important or not important. Very valuable info.

Essays are very important due to covid. Take as many AP’s as your brain will allow and do well in them. Good luck.
