In-State Transfer Student Help

I haven't been able to find much information for transfer students here; most topics seem to be for incoming freshmen right out of high school. So I guess that makes the application process a bit more nerve-wracking for me, being an older student and all :)

So here's some background: I am an Oregon resident. I graduated from HS in 2006 and finally completed my "Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer Degree" in 2011. My HS GPA was a meager 3.04 (and I have never taken the SATs or ACTs), but my GPA from the community college was a 3.66 and I was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

From the info I can find on the U of O website, only my college transcripts will be considered at this point, and since I'm not a 'freshman' I'm not required to submit the admissions essay....a big relief for me because I was pretty intimidated by that. Is anyone else able to verify this for me? Or would you still recommend that I submit the essay?

My main concern: It took me 5 years to finish up my associate degree. I moved around a bit, and life just happened. My grades were never affected though: my GPA never fell below the minimum requirement for admissions....I am just concerned that my rather sporadic attendance would look bad to the admissions counselors. Does anyone think it is necessary to submit a "special circumstances" essay to explain this? If admissions is concerned by this, would they ask for an explanation or simply defer me? I am extremely eager to get started on my undergrad studies and am really hoping to be accepted for Spring term (another concern, as most info seems to pertain to Fall 2013 admissions). Any suggestions or words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi HopefulDuck: first off, just in case you couldn’t find it on our site, the deadline for transfer students for Spring 2013 is February 1 ([Alternate Deadlines for Admission | Admissions](http://admissions.uoregon.edu/apply/altdline)).

Here is how you figure out whether you apply as a transfer student or a freshman: For applicants who have completed 35 or fewer quarter credits (or 23 or fewer semester credits) by the time of expected enrollment at the UO, admission will be based on both freshman and transfer admission requirements. For applicants who have completed 36 or more quarter credits (or 24 or more semester credits) by the time of expected enrollment at the UO, admission will be based only on the transfer admission requirements.

I’d recommend adding up your credits to make sure, but if you’ve earned an AAOT you should be a pure transfer. I can’t tell you exactly what to do about your “sporadic attendance,” but “life just happened” is why we have the special circumstances section.

I hope this helped, but it sounds like you’ve got lots of questions, so I’d strongly advise you to call your admissions counselor. You should be able to figure out who they are here: [Admissions Counselors in Oregon | Admissions](http://admissions.uoregon.edu/uocounselors/counselor-or).

Thanks for the reply!
I submitted my application as a transfer student. I didn’t submit a special circumstances essay because my GPA was consistently above 3.5…so I just pray it’s enough to get me in. So now I sit and wait!! If Santa brings me only 1 gift, I hope it’s an acceptance letter! haha  (even if it comes after Christmas)

HopefulDuck~ I too am a transfer student (OOS) and applied around the same time as you, and I just received a decision on my application today. They extended me an offer of admission! So, best wishes!!!

psychguy - Congrats! I haven’t checked this forum in a while, but I too received an admission offer! YAY!! I’m all set up for the orientation/advising session late this month! So excited! Go Ducks! :)
