In-State Tuition for North Carolina Schools?

Hi, I’m rather new to CC so sorry if this is in the wrong section or something.

Anyways, I’m wondering whether I would be eligible for in-state tuition at a school like UNC Chapel Hill even though I do not live in North Carolina. My mom lives in NC while my dad lives in MN (they aren’t divorced, just a temporary situation) and my mom owns a house in NC that my entire family is planning to move to once I go to college (I’m a rising senior). I live with my father and therefore I live in MN but was wondering if the fact that my mom lives in NC and owns a house there is enough for me to get in-state tuition at NC universities.

Thank you.

Has your mother lived in NC for >12 months? Is she a registered state resident and has she paid NC state taxes? Does she claim you on her taxes?

My mother has lived in NC for over 12 months, she is a registered state resident, and she does claim me on her taxes. Does this mean that I will get in-state tuition at North Carolina Universities :)?

It’s possible. Look at the document I linked. Your best bet is to call the school’s admission office and talk to them.

So mom lives full time in NC and her utility bills would reflect that?

Okay, thank you!

Your parents aren’t separated, so are they filing taxes as Married, Filing Jointly? Which home is considered their primary residence.

Yes they are filing taxes as married, filing jointly. The home in NC is considered their primary residence.

When your father files his taxes does he file a NC resident tax return and a non-resident MN tax return? Does your mother work? Where is your father registered to vote? What state issued his driver’s license? In other words, is he a NC resident? Since they are filing married, filing jointly, then I suspect that the NC home is only a primary home if the first question is Yes.

You will need to talk with each school and ask? Graduating from a MN high school will be a red flag.

^^The parents could be MFJ for federal purposes but filing their respective resident states separately (dad-MN, mom-NC).

The parents are filing jointly, but the student needs to clarify how they’re filing state taxes.
