In state tuition for out of state

I’m a junior in high school and I was just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get in state tuition at USC by scoring high on the ACT or something like that. Any help or comments are appreciated.

You also could apply for in-state tuition if you live in certain Southern states and are applying for a major you can’t get in your state: http://www.nasfaa.org/students/state___regional_college_tuition_discounts.aspx

Look at Scholarships for OOS students on the USC site. The McNair &Horseshoe are by interview only; These two & rest are decided by your Top Scholar application due in Nov. You can look at other comments, but it seems that USC is very generous in the number of scholarships awarded from the Cooper to the Woodrow. Also look into the USC Alumni Association Legacy scholarship if a parent or grandparent or legal guardian is a USC graduate. http://www.sc.edu/admissions/apply/costs_and_aid/oosscholarships.html

Thanks! @GCBMIB‌ and @InigoMontoya‌

If scholarships are necessary for attendance, make sure you have other financially affordable options as a back-up. This year’s applicants were very strong and the GPA and ACT ranges for scholarships posted online are lower than the stats of recipients this year. My child’s stats are very good and based on the online information, we thought she would receive something, but no merit aid was offered so we will be paying the full OOS amount.

Just a note, but you should apply for any and all scholarships at USC. If you get even a small departmental scholarship, you may very well be eligible for reduced out-of-state tuition, which is significantly less than regular out-of-state tuition. I know in my department, there were several students who got small (I want to say $500, although it could have been more) scholarships and they were eligible for reduced tuition on top of that because of the small scholarship.

@jennie11‌ Wow! Are you saying your child fell in avg range posted for scholarships and didn’t receive any aid? Even one lower than the one you expected? Just 2 years ago my daughter earned a Cooper with a super high GPA but SAT below the avg posted. It really does seem like stats are increasing every year. Good luck to your student @ USC!

Yes it is important to note that score and GPA ranges on the money matters/scholarship page reflect the end result of the students from previous year. This is different from schools who do their scholarships by setting a benchmark and if you meet it, you get an amount. I’m guessing that USC’s method is some type of percentage (top x% get this scholarship A) although they seem to have a way to balance GPA and test scores. Anyway, this obviously means the stronger the class, the higher the stats will end up being for each award.

The only absolute that I know of is Leiber which is automatically awarded to National Merit Finalists.

@momoftcm, yes, I called hoping it was a mistake and was told that this year’s class was very strong and higher stats were needed. I’m still shocked. Thanks for the well wishes.
