In which drom should I live?

I can be a loud & crazy party animal, but at the same time I love to take an easy day. I would like to have my own private bathroom, but that's not possible at UCR, so I am asking YOU. In which dorm should I reside in?

I definitely want to live in a clean & newest dorm possible. Living near where there are fun and exciting activities would be very fortunate too!

Clean and newest dorm: Pentland. It is also the closest dorm to a “private” bathroom.
Pentland is known to be anti-social and is the most expensive dorm.
If you are a loud and crazy party animal, you might like East Lothian.

Go to Discovery Day and check out all the dorms.

A&I - oldest, but loudest dorm, public bathroom
Pentland - newest, most privatized (Private bathroom and shower room), and quietest dorm (Depends on the hall you are in. Some halls are pretty loud, but mostly quiet.)
East Lothian - pretty new, public bathroom, pretty loud
West Lothian - pretty old, public bathroom, pretty loud

If you’re really outgoing, I’d consider living at the apartments down the street. Half the price, with your own room (if you share a room it’d be one fourth of the dorm cost), bathroom, shared kitchen and living room with 3 other roommates who’d also have their own bedrooms and bathrooms. Obviously your life won’t be as social as someone in Lothian, but you can get pretty close. One professor really swayed my decision when he said you shouldn’t have to pay to make friends ya know?

But I think it would be better off living on campus for freshmen year… I am thinking of Pentland Hills because dorms are places where you would want to study/sleep. I can always party at different dorms right?

Which dorm is located near the center of UCR? I think where the dorm is located is kind of an important factor.

Pentland is nice and new, but it is easy to seclude yourself when you just want quiet time. I lived in AI and I LOVED it. Its a social place and people stay up late talking and getting to know each other. You go to dinner together, party together, study together and take classes together. It is a great experience for your first year in college.

Pentland doesn’t have a dining hall, so you would have to eat in either Lothian or AI. The walk isn’t far, but it is convenient to have a dining hall downstairs as they are in AI and Lothian. Also, programs are often put on in the dining halls, so you are more likely to meet people in such an active environment.

I disagree with Robotkat in suggesting the apartment life instead of dorming. Once people are in apartments, people tend to be more into their own routine and not as regularly social as freshmen in dorms. It is true you will meet people in the apartments where you live, but in terms of networking and having more quality time with new friends, the dorms are a great way to stay connected. If cost is a concern, apartment life is much cheaper. If it isn’t an issue, I’d say give the dorms a chance. You will not regret it and you will make friends for your entire college career.

I said it obviously wouldn’t be as social as the dorms. When isn’t money an issue? I just brought it up because I don’t think its really ever mentioned to incoming freshman as an alternative.

Make sure to sign up for your dorm assignments and pay the money for the contract as soon as you can so that you hopefully get your first choice of dorms!

given all you’ve said, east lo. AI will be too old and run down for you and pentland will most likely be too quiet for you.

but if the quality of the rooms and bathrooms is the biggest deal to you, i do know some people who live in pentland and say it can still be very social. itll depend largely on who you’re roomed with though.
