I have questions about filing both US and Canadian tax returns! If you've been thru this and could exchange some info with me that would be great!

My daughter and I are both US citizens only, she is in her first year.

On my US tax return - with my kids at US colleges, I get tax forms from their schools that I use to claim educational credits. Can I do that for my daughter studying in Canada?

On her Canadian return - is she a resident (she just started in September in 2013)? Will that change for 2014?

I have a few more Q's but will see if anyone can help with these first.

Why would she be filing a Canadian return?

She worked there and got a scholarship, which means she rec’d two tax forms.

Call Canada’s tax folks at 855-452 8944. It is better to get the facts straight from them, rather than worrying if you did the right thing or not.

You should speak to an accountant who deals with both U.S. and Canadian tax issues. We have to use one because I and my children all have dual citizenship so thanks to the crazy IRS rules, we all have to file U.S. returns even though not a dollar is earned in the U.S. Your D will likely have to do the same. I don’t know what the definition of residency is for Canadian tax issues. Students on visas are not considered resident for other purposes.
