Incoming Freshman

Hi. I'm an incoming McGill management undergraduate, and I just had a few questions that I hope some people would be kind enough to answer:

1) Is it true that Douglas Hall's meal plan covers 5 days a week only? If so, can you eat at places like RVC on the weekends?

2) Is there really a grade deflation in the management department?

3) How heavy is the workload in the first year? (I'm not looking for an exact answer--just a rough ballpark is fine).

4) How much is a typical meal on the meal plan?

5) Are you allowed to have a mini fridge/do they provide you with a mini fridge in the residences?

6) Any other advice for me? (courses, profs, etc).

Thanks, your answers are much appreciated!

I can help with some of these =S

1) Douglas Hall is only open during weekdays. But that doesn’t mean that your meal plan will be shut off during weekends! BMH is a minute’s walk away, is open during the weekend, and takes home base dollars (the same account that you would use to pay for food at Douglas.) RVC is exactly the same - open on weekends, home base dollars - but a slightly farther walk.

2) Courses in management are required to maintain a B-/B average. This is neither very high nor very low. I’ve had friends who have been both graded up and down, but I can’t say for certain how often either happens.

4) Depends on what you buy. A dinner plate with main and two sides is roughly $7.50, but a lot of people burned through their money very quickly buying desert, additional sides, and in particular drinks, which are one of the least cost-efficient things you can buy from a cafeteria.

5) Douglas certainly does. You can find the answer to this question for other residences on the McGill website.
