Housing/Communities and Meal Plan

So I decided on reading that booklet they sent me and I was wondering what these residential learning communities / interest housing were. Are they a popular choice? Do people who enroll in a learning community share a building? If you don't enroll, are you randomly assigned in with other freshman or put into a random community? Any recommended communities for an incoming freshman?

And how is the food at SU? Which is a popular meal plan for the average male? I usually eat three meals a day at home but people are saying to go with the plan with the least meals. Theres Deluxe/19/14 available to all students.

Ok just got back from the multicultural dinner and we had a blast chatting about the dining hall food over a lovely catered dinner :)

Learning communities: you can request a learning community and you will end up on a floor with people from that community. I got tossed into an honors LC my freshman year (honors was the one LC you didn't choose then, but it no longer exists) and ended up loving it. It just means you automatically have something in common, and you'll spend more time together.
If you don't choose a community, you'll be assigned randomly with the other freshmen to a random floor with no particular theme.

Food.
14 meals is a pretty standard one. You can always add superfood money. SUpercardFood works at places like Schine, Food.com, Snack bars, kimmel,Goldstein (south), Goldstein (the fancy restaurant on north), etc, and also at the dining halls (which eat up money on the cards like crazy). That's how you'll get your third meal each day. I always have too much supercardfood money.

Dining halls are pretty standard. Sunday brunch is pretty good. There are always lots of options. It's hard to be healthy if you eat in the dining halls. I'm much happier cooking for myself this year and grabbing quick bites at food.com. When you want something different, there's always marshall street. Insomnia cookies + Tasti D Lite are heaven.

Thanks for the reply.

Any info on any particular learning community? I'm interested in the international communities as well as the alcohol/drug free housing since I don't want a roommate vomiting all over the room... Heh, I've been hearing bad roommate stories.

threekids--honors LC does still exist, just only for freshman...brockway is all honors, brew 2 and a few sections of other floors. i'm in honors this year and i love it; it's a good balance between quiet floor/LIFE floor/still people who have fun floor. =D

but RMC, i'm living on substance-free next year...it's Sadler 3 (look it up online) and it's a decent building--yay for smoothie bar!

most people choose LCs more to get in a specific building...like shaw 1 you'd choose the debate LC...there's usually a class associated with them but it's not all that serious...they're more for grouping people with similar interests and a convenient way to bypass a crappy housing number.

as far as meals go...i would recommend getting 19...i'm a girl and i started with 19 and dropped down to 14, and went with 10 for this semester. however i cook a LOT. and with 19 you can always drop it down for a credit on your account...21 is a bit nuts, especially because there aren't even 2 different meals for breakfast/lunch on the weekends--it's brunch. most of the guys i know ended up at 19 first semester after dropping down from the 21-deluxe.

glad you picked SU and PM with any questions!

Well I didn't get invited to the honors program.. I actually put the engineering school as my first choice not knowing that it wasn't the most popular of SU. I'm not really into engineering anyway so I'm trying to transfer out to something less technical. Theres a LC for the engineering school but I'm afraid that it will be completely dominated by introverted guys. (And I'd like to meet people..)
I've visited the site and so far, I don't know which building is nice or not. Any recommendations? I would hate to get a "crappy housing number".

For meals, I'd recommend 19 meals per week. I'm 5'9", about 165lbs and it's rare that I waste any of my meals. In fact, I sometimes wish that I had more meals for a given week. If you care at all about having 3 meals a day, and at least 2 on the weekends (because most likely, you'll sleep in until brunch), 19 should be perfect.

As for building, I'd recommend Brewster or Boland, commonly known here as BBB. It's got great food and the dorm itself is great (It was recently redone). Feel free to ask more questions. I'll be more than happy to answer them.

Do they tell your lottery number, or is it just a blind process? It's nice to know which are the nicer buildings, but unless you join a LC, you have no control over where you end up...right?

We visited yesterday; housing placement is completely random (and I don't think they even do a survey of preferences for roommates)...If someone knows differently, please let us know.....

Threekid'skid, who are you? How do you look because I was at the multicultural dinner also and I spoken with quite a few people. Maybe I spoken to you too :)

By the way, I'm really crossing my fingers for Brewster Boland dorm. It's practically the best and newly renovated dorm there so far. I heard it actually is selected randomly and you can't pick.

just for clarification, you don't get a housing number until you're applying for housing as a returning student...most freshman will be put in one of BBB, Sadler/Lawrinson, or Flint/Day (known as "the mount"). of those, I'd say S/L is the best in terms of location, BBB has the best food, and F/D has the best view/atmosphere...if you go to the housing site there are building descriptions and usually what LC is where.

yeah, there is no survey for roommates, but honestly there aren't too many crises here--I know several people who will room with their "random" roommate again next year. You can request someone if you know them but I'd recommend not--it's better to peacefully coexist rather than be best friends.

LCs are a way to "bypass" the random assignment...if you really like a particular dorm, sign up for an LC in it...creative non fiction and arts adventure are both in BBB...LIFE (substance free) is Sadler...etc etc.

on the more central part of campus--booth, marion, dellplain, etc--there will be more upperclassmen...the mount and bbb are 80-90% freshmen and sadler lawrinson is probably 75%.

The list of all the LC's and the location of each is given on the LC website. That could be a good place to start if you want a specific dorm. That is, if the housing process hasn't ended already for the incoming freshmen.

House of London- I'm 5'6" ish, long brown hair, light skin, was in black slacks/ teal sweater, ring any bells?
BBB is in a bad location, notoriously unwanted by upperclassmen. Brockway, however, has great food, and yes, it was recently redone (still tiny rooms tho). In one of the info sessions, however, a fellow leader was raving about it, so who knows.

I'm sitting in one of those tiny rooms (in Brockway) right now...I don't think they're too bad. They're all open doubles, comparable to any other open double on campus...splits are generally bigger in dimensions but not in space (there's a wall).

if anyone has any more specific questions about particular dorms or treks to classes feel free to PM!

Threekids'kid, your description is not ringing a bell. Well there was quite a number of people I think it'll be hard to actually narrow you down. If you're talking about BBB as in the dorm close to the bridge, I don't really see why it is considered in a bad location but the looks past the bridge isn't really pretty. I'm really now too impressed with the cramped split doubles but I'll keep my eyes open for Brockway though.

Thanks for offering to answer questions: if I am in Newhouse and minoring in Music Industry, what dorm do you recommend for convenience (and fun) without having a roommate that will be barfing all over?

Thanks

I chose the SAPHE interest housing, PATHWAYS learning community and LC Smith learning community.. I think thats Sadler, Brewster, and Shaw. Heh, I'm hoping I made good choices.

I'm currently in a split in Boland and I love it :) I actually wanted to stay but my friend's lottery number was bad so we're going to be in Lawrinson next year...which is a lot older :(

haha, Cayumie: Lawrinson is being renovated this summer (I think only upper floors will be done by the fall). I lived there this year - not bad, but I'm so glad to be living in an apt. next year. Did you get a corner? Those are nice.

Skil--BBB is the closest dorm to Newhouse (if you take the VA shortcut)... there's a huge range in quality there, though--whether or not you have a floor lounge, how new the room is, layout, etc...the suites in brewster are pretty good-2 open doubles and a common room. don't know too much about music industry; they just added it last year I think?

For housing, stay AWAY from the Butterfield House. Well, unless you want to live with 35 girls in an old sorority house your freshman year.
