I’ll be off to Asia next school year. I’m quite nervous just thinking about it now. What if things don’t work out there? what could be my fall back? has anyone gone to Singapore to study? how was your experience? Do you think I can make it there? Considering I have been a slow learner ever since due to my dyslexia.
I don’t have an experience on studying abroad yet. I’d just like to commend your enthusiasm with studying. I think, like what you told me in my thread it’s a matter of mindset You have survived high school or will survive high school with your dyslexia, I think you’d be able to face studying abroad with such guts. Although I wanna know whether you’ve studied the language where you’ll be off too. As far as I know you have to learn some languages to survive out there.
Thank you for that @ready100. I appreciate your commendation :D. I am working on studying the languages needed. It is what I’ll focusing on now because I need the time to learn it.
That’s a nice step you’ve made there! good luck on your course then
Are you an American going abroad for a year with a college and does the college have a special program or will you be in immersion ? Or are you going to a Singaporean college to earn a degree? Are you a heritage speaker ? How did you choose this college?
I’m an American going abroad to achieve a degree there. I’ll be in immersion but will still have support studying thru my tutor online. What is a heritage speaker? It was one of the options given by diversity abroad to me.
How well do you speak the language of instruction? How well do you speak the language spoken in the country where you’re going? No other support system than an online tutor, nothing “on the ground”?
As of now, I’m still working on learning the language. I still have a huge amount of time before school starts for next year. We haven’t figured out that part yet.
I’m worried you’ll be one of the casualties that appear on cc - the culture shock is tougher than expected, they feel very alienated, they don’t understand anything and are getting nothing but Fs thus tanking any chance at a decent transfer back to the us, and - since those often are good students who had merit-worthy stats - list freshman status fir scholarships.
Attending high school as an international exchange student often provides a built-in network whereas going abroad on your own with nothing but someone online with, at best cef A1 level in the language (since you’re self teaching, perhaps with a tutor? ) is really fraught with problems.
What are your motivations? Have you lived abroad before? Is the country you’re going to developed or developing?
heritage speaker is a student that knows the language by heart. they did not just study the language, they also know the culture/heritage from where the language came from. heritage speakers won’t have a hard time speaking orally or writing based on the language.
- lost freshman status for scholarships
@boysilva - In the US, “heritage speaker” refers to someone who has exposure to the language in their home and/or community. Maybe mom and/or dad speak the language, or maybe only grandma does. The language skills vary greatly from one heritage speaker to another. Some are fully fluent speakers and may also be able to read and write, while others have limited speaking command of the language and cannot read it at all. Often their vocabulary is restricted to domestic items, and they have no familiarity with academic language. While they normally have excellent pronunciation, and decent grammar, and are able to communicate well in the settings that they are familiar with, they still need extra support to master the communication skills that someone fully educated in that language would have, and thus are not ready to step straight into a college classroom.
You better start preparing yourself @humpydumpy Sounds like it’s a tough world out there. But I do think He’s pretty determined on where he’s taking his career. But @MYOS1634 has a point you’d have to look into. though you still have time I believe. I’m rooting for you still
With those thoughts then I think I have to double check on everything, make sure I’d be supported with all my needs. Thanks a lot for that @MYOS1634 I really do appreciate it.
@ready100 thanks for the warming support bro. I was wondering, is it you who has a sister or a relative who’s going to study abroad as well?
Yes, That’s me. I believe you guys are under the same program if I’m not mistaken
Yeah. I’m sure glad she’s on diversity abroad’s program as well. But I don’t think we’re on the same program though or study abroad program is what you meant by that?
Singapore is a great place - very modern with a nice culture that blends the best of Southeast Asian and British influences. You will have much less culture shock there than if you went to, for example, India or Indonesia. Plus, you are well located to cheaply visit many of the other nearby countries on your holidays and school breaks, most of which have world-class beaches! Relax and enjoy!!
You got that right @londondad I’m quite hopeful I could sustain my learning processes there because they’re also very technologically advance. lol. I love your “visit nearby countries” idea a lot I hope I could try.
I believe you could you’re in good hands with diversity abroad I believe
