Incoming transfer student, wondering about frat life.

Hey everyone, I am coming in as a second year from Virginia Tech.

I was just curious about greek life. I hear it's a lot more prevalent here at UVA compared to VT as well as most of Virginia.

I rushed and joined Kappa Sigma last year, but I knew a couple of people in the frat beforehand, so I'm not 100% sure if I am going to try out another frat (if I am allowed based on the fact that I am transferring in).

I was just curious about people's thoughts about different frats? What do they think about Kappa Sigma? One person told me that nobody really knows about them because they don't have open parties, only mixers/socials.

Who has the best parties? Who hangs out with the hottest girls? Who gets along with other frats the best? Who has the nicest house? What are the "tiers"? Who are the "preppy" frats? Who are the "southern" frats? Who are the "pretty boy" frats that I've heard about?

Based on what I've heard, I've been considering rejoining Kappa Sig if I like the guys there, or maybe planning on rushing Delta Sig, FIJI, or Phi Psi. I've also heard about Sigma Chi, Theta Xi, and Pikap. I refuse to even consider TKE and Pike since I didn't like a SINGLE person in those frats back at Tech.

Anyway, yeah, it differs campus to campus and I was planning on rushing/rejoining in the fall (not the spring, since I am a second year) so I was just curious andwanted to get a head start. Won't have that much time to experiment around at all the different houses! So what's the scoop?

PS-forgot to add this, but what are the general sizes of each frat and their respective pledge class? I heard kappa sig doesn't really have that big of a pledge class :(

Are you serious or joking?

Just because you don't like them at VT does not mean these guys have the same character at UVA. In fact, fraternity/sorority chapters vary at every school - for instance, KKG is all southern and conservative at UVA whereas the chapter at Stanford is mostly composed of student-athletes. I'm not a fan of greek life so I suggest you talk to as many frat boys when you arrive at UVA.

Eh? Why are you calling them 'frats' when you're in one? Since you already pledged Kappa Sigma and I'll assume was initiated, you won't be allowed to join another fraternity. You'll have to affiliate with the chapter here or not at all. I don't think we have a TKE chapter here, but we do have 31 IFC fraternities -- only one of which you should be considering.

Yup, you've made your bed, now sleep in it...or I guess your other choice is the couch.

So basically the rules of IFC are Kappa Sig or bust? even if i don't like hanging out with the guys here?

I don't get Greek life at all (and why hasn't coined a fraternity name in say, Sanskrit?), but I suppose your concern is that you still want to keep interacting with your fraternity after graduation?
