Increasing scholarship in second year?

My S received a nice talent/academic scholarship from Frost. Is there any chance that he can appeal (through audition or gpa, etc) for an increased amount next year? I thought I read that some schools will increase the original amount based on how much they need you.

My S’s scholarship amount increased in his 2nd year by a bit (and every bit counts). He was invited to apply for scholarships that are not available to Freshmen, Not sure how common this is overall…In his case I think it was based on his overall playing, as there was not a separate audition beyond what he was already doing (his professor has been pushing him and giving him opportunities, so that is good)

My D appealed her scholarship for her second year. We haven’t heard back yet but I’m hopeful that some of her national competition wins this year will help bump that amount. I’ll let you know if we were successful or not.

Hello @Propinquity4444 - This varies by school, so you need to ask someone in admissions/Financial Aid at your student’s school. Yes, some schools do this. Some schools do not do this, perhaps with limited exceptions for changes in family circumstances that can’t wait for the next FAFSA. Even a response from a Frost family on this music major forum might not provide you with the correct/current policy. I hope you find out good news!

Hi there! Just to update you, D appealed her merit award for next year and it was increased by 4K. Half what we asked for but better than nothing. She did win Downbeat again this year as a college freshman which is tough to do and was the only winner from her school so I’m sure that weighed into it. We can appeal every year and I intend to do that, especially if she wins some other competitions as well. Best of luck!

SpartanDrew——— Congratulations! That’s wonderful and very encouraging! Thank you for updating. A question…Did The New School ask “financial reasons” or “FAFSA 2017” when your daughter appealed an increased “merit award”? When did she appeal? DownBeat SMA result didn’t come out until late in April (officially). My son is starting as a freshman this fall. If his talent / merit scholarship is increased, it would be very helpful since a tuition seems increasing every year.

@JeJeJe We had a very short form asking for amount needed to increase merit money and reasons behind it. Of course they want financial reasons which we gave but the national awards she won last year with downbeat and YoungArts likely is what gave her the bump. They did not ask for FAFSA. We also saw that jazz students can appeal both Fall and Spring. we sent in the appeal and when she found out she won Downbeat she sent it in again with the updated information. Feel free to send me a PM if I can help further. And congratulations to your son!
