Independent contractor or business owner?

I'm filling out the CSS Profile and trying to figure out whether or not I need to complete the business supplement. I am self-employed, but do now own a business per se. The same situation applies to my husband.

I know they tend to add back in many deductions, however, they can get the same info from our Schedule C.

Anyone out there with any recent experience with this same issue or with any recommendations? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

My kid’s school required it but I remember during college application season (in other words, when I had to filll it out for over half a dozen schools) at least one school specifically said it didn’t need the business supplement for independent contractors. I would check with the school.

How do you get paid? Do your customers pay you directly and give you a 1099 at the end of the year? Do you sell goods to third parties or have employees? How is your company incorporated? Is it a sole proprietorship or a single member LLC? These are some questions that will determine if are self employed or own a business.

In most cases, if you are the sole employee of the corporation (and the basic purpose of the incorporation is for liability purposes), and your income is through providing services, then you can consider yourself self employed. Business supplement is really for companies with real assets, employees, sales and use tax liabilities, bank accounts that separate from that of the owner etc. Again, I am not a lawyer or tax accountant so you may want to call up the schools to see how they handle it, as suggested by 2collegewego.

Who is Self-Employed?

Thank you both! I appreciate your help. I went with saying we’re self-employed, but put 0 when asked if we owned any businesses.
