My younger brother is a sophomore in HS, all honor student, his grades are up in the 93-95 range. By this summer he will have completed (and most likely honored) chemistry and biology/environmental science. I attend Stony Brook University School of Medicine and I found that I will likely be able to find him a research opportunity of his interest for the summer. He and I discussed this and he appears passionate about it but his question (and mine) is what the overall benefit it will be for him to do this. In other words, he needs to know how much to commit for this to really be worth it. I suggested that the goal for him this summer is for him to experience research and try to enjoy it and then ideally, continue it next summer and be able to participate in a Siemens or Intel competition. He seemed interested in that idea but is not sure if it is realistic, or worth it, etc. I feel that no matter what, he will likely go into the science field when in college and that he will be able to transfer his skills from research now into quickly being able to work in labs in college. Thus, my opinion is that no matter what, research will be worth it.

What do you guys think? thank you.
