Independent student

Hi everyone,

I plan to move to the US (Florida) and apply to colleges this summer. And I was wondering if I could have the independent status as I will be living with an aunt and not my parents. I will be 21 this summer by the way. My father died and my mom is abroad and unemployed and all the information I found online are quite confusing. If someone could help me understand the process please.
Thank you

Independent status for what? FAFSA? Given the limited set of facts you provide, it doesn’t sound like you qualify as an independent student for FAFSA.

Are you a US citizen?

You will not be independent for school/aid purposes. You also will be OOS for all public univs. You will have to use your mom’s financial info on FA apps. She may not be employed, but she may have assets or some income from the loss of your dad (sorry about the loss of your dad).

Hi everyone,
I’m new to using a forum so I really want some help since I have no idea what to do.
So I’m a college student living in France, I’m a freshman in a French-English law degree. I actually have American citizenship and have been living in France for the past 6 years. Due to financial and health problems, I think of leaving France and going to College in the US. I’m going to live in Florida, especially a little city called Hollywood and I plan to go there during the summer. I want to apply to FIU since I have a few cousins who went there and they told me it’s a good college. I would like to start with the proceedings while I’m in France but I don’t know where to begin and since I don’t have any money, I doubt my application will be accepted. Moreover, I don’t know how it will happen with the transcripts and all since they’re in French. Can someone who came to the US from abroad help me out please? Will i have to take the SAT like the american students? and can I fill out the Fafsa while I’m still in France?
Thank you in advance

With health issue, coming to the US w/o health insurance will be an issue.

You will not be instate for FIU. Yes, you will have to take the SAT or ACT, most likely.

You will be a TRANSFER student even if you “want” to start over.

You will not qualify for Florida Bright Futures aid since you didn’t go to a FL high school, etc.

FAFSA, even if you end up with a 0 EFC, will only give you about $5700.

Is your mom a US citizen?
