I'm trying to advise a friend and need some help. At what income level does an independent single person not qualify for any need based aid (not loans) for community college? My friend doesn't make very much (15K last year but currently unemployed), but recently filed her FAFSA and was told that she didn't qualify. It seems like a mistake imo. Any advice for her?

EFC? Full-time student? Attended colleges before?

There is an income protection allowance for an independent student of $9730. Here is the formula guide: http://ifap.ed.gov/efcformulaguide/attachments/091913EFCFormulaGuide1415.pdf. Your friend can plug in her numbers for the Independent Students Without Dependents Other Than a Spouse to see how the EFC was derived. If she lost her job, she can request a review from the financial aid office for loss of income. Each school handles these differently.

Thank you kelsmom!
