Indian girl wants to get into mit.....

Hey guys I am from India and I desperately want to get into MIT.......
I got perfect 10 in class 10 cgpa...
I tutor some economically backward children in maths and computers......
I am also a professional swimmer, play tennis and badminton...
I have had some classical music training and i sing and play guitar(have a band as well).....
I will be taking SAT1 and 2(Maths level 1 or 2 and physics) and TOEFL.......
I will probably do a non paid internship in a local software firm(I want to pursue Computer science as my major).....
I am also planning to take AP Calculus BC, Physics E/M, Computer Science and possibly English Literature or US History.....Any free online material available for these tests because my school does not offer any APs......
but I am not quite sure about these things will got me into MIT.....I have seen the acceptance rates and they are really very disheartening.........:-(
What else should to make my chances better....any help will be appreciated.......

Why do you “desperately want to get into MIT”? Don’t tell me, let me guess. Prestige.

The fact that you “desperately want to get in” is irrelevant. Plenty of applicants “desperately” want to get into a certain school. The school doesn’t care – they want who they want.

It is foolish to idolize a school which is a crapshoot for anybody.

^ Well put. Also, I don’t want to be mean, but judging from the way you type and explain, you probably have some self-esteem issue.

I’m not trying to discourage you. Instead, look up and lighten up! MIT will surely look at how the student can fit in in their environment, and your attitude won’t help at all if it’s hinted in your essays or recommendations. Just be brave and don’t worry about how things are gonna work out yet. You sound like you’re half-rejected.

What’s a “professional swimmer?”

Come back to the forum once you have your test scores. Assuming you do extremely well, we can suggest schools in addition to MIT that you might want to consider. We also need to know how much, if any, financial aid you require.

By the way, if you are a top student in India who wants to do computer science, I assume you pursuing admission to the IITs. Or did that not come through, so you’re now look abroad?

Just be the best YOU that you can be. Anything you do just to get into MIT is going to be seen as . . . well . . . something you did just to get into MIT. And that’s not what MIT is looking for. Be yourself. Follow your passions. Don’t give up “Activity X,” that you love, in order to pursue “Activity Y,” that you think will look better on your application.

And, most importantly, find several other schools that you’d be happy attending. Not every girl gets to go to the prom with the cutest boy in class . . . so it’s time to look beyond flashy good looks and consider substance. What is it you like about MIT . . . and what other schools can offer you some (or all) of the same things?

You will want to revise the phrasing “economically backward children”.

You are in for a huge competition. Lots of Indian students want to go to MIT. It’s even harder for internationals.

MIT is ultra-competitive and is a reach for ANY student. It would be unwise to set your heart on MIT and be disappointed if you don’t get in. MIT often likes students who do science research projects, but that is not a requirement. If you want to apply to college in a smart way, begin to research the many other excellent schools in the US (there are a lot of outstanding schools which are science/technology oriented as well) in order to give yourself options. I’m not saying don’t try for MIT, just don’t count on it.

Jeez…sorry my post seems too standoffish…I was just trying to explain as clearly as possible because I was not sure if you would be aware of the education system in our country…by ‘professional swimmer’ I mean that I am a state level champ all set for nationals…n sorry 4 that ‘economically backward’ I just posted it n I can’t revise it now I was trying to use a politer version of “tutoring poor children for free” lol I see that it didn’t work…

@
M’s Mom
Well I have just come in 11th grade so i will have to wait to give JEE(enterance exam for IIT) for 2 years and I am preparing for that as well…

The bigger question is why MIT? Remember the US is not like India, where the college you go to determines your life trajectory. It is not. If you take away nothing else, please take that away from this discussion.

^Unless the OP is of British descent and has an English-sounding name, I am not sure your advice is appropriate. I know it is not true in Canada, so unless the US is a race-blind society, it would not be true there either.

I have posted this twice before, but here it is again:
