Indiana SSA Essay #1

Community Essay: Indiana University students contribute in many ways to what has long been recognized as a rich community of diverse ideas, cultures, and experiences. Identify your most significant contribution to one or more of the communities to which you belong. (Communities, for example, can form around shared experiences in music, sports, the arts, culture, ethnicity, shared beliefs, or ideas.) Describe your level of achievement or involvement and reflect on your most important contributions. Briefly describe how these experiences have influenced you. (200-400 words)

Life is full of communities. Their different outlooks and innovative thinking push its members to strive to be their very best. The writing community has long been known for their creative ideas and interactiveness. Their novels and essays express themes and question ideas, and their influence extends into other communities. I can identify myself with the writing community; my creativeness, questioning, and confidence can attest to that.

When I first started writing, it wasn't for a school assignment or essay. At the start of 2014, I bought a new journal. My New Year's Resolution was to write in the journal; not necessarily everyday, but enough to start a habit of getting my thoughts onto paper. After I began writing, I noticed my stress became much easier to cope with. My confidence also grew, and I started acting more like myself around others without a fear of rebuke or embarrassment. The act of writing was an act of healing and pleasure; my ambitions soon soared to write a story. I began in October, structuring my book of poetry in journal so all the fine-worked details and themes were laid out. As of today, my story is a quarter done, and I can say I have not been more proud of something in my life. All it took to start writing was to start thinking about some problems and events that occurred around me. My questioning nature wondered why my peers did not ask the same questions that I began to ask. The more they did not want to see, the more I wanted to tell my story and share the questions I had. My poetry book is a way for me to share my ideas with others, using my passion for writing as an outlet.

A community of writers can be the most daunting table to sit at, but it can also be the one that challenges you the most. Their creativeness has inspired many to question not only the world around them, but to also question themselves. This community can affect so many groups of people because of their ability to communicate and touch others. In a world of texts and informal emails, I'm proud to say I am part of the writing community.

Here are my thoughts:

Remove the first paragraph because it informs rather not share with admissions who you are. Consider starting with this sentence instead:
I can identify myself with the writing community: confident, creativeness, and questioning.

Remember to answer this part of the prompt, which is the most important (repeated twice):
Identify your most significant contribution to one or more of the communities

Indiana U wants to know what will a student bring to its community. What contributions you’ve made in the “writing” community will most likely to be what you’ll bring to its campus as well.

Hope this helps. Best of luck! :)
