Indicating Majors in my College Applications- Engineering and Politics, wrong combination?

Hello guys,

I’m a high school student applying to some US universities. I like International relations and politics but I also have some interest in engineering. My high school subjects match all these three interests but I’m not sure if it’ll be okay for me to indicate that I like all these three because they are very different. Any advice?

How will it affect my applications?

Many universities with ABET-accredited engineering majors have a specific set of classes you need to take in a specific order, making it virtually impossible for you to double major and graduate in 4years (even without double majors, engineering majors often need five years).
So, indicating both is okay but be aware you’ll likely have to choose.
There may be exceptions at Harvey Mudd, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell, Clarkson, and Union.

At some colleges, you may have to apply to the engineering division versus the arts and science division. Or you may have to apply to a specific major. In some cases, some majors may be more difficult to change into later if you enroll.

Do you know of such universities?(where changing is more difficult?)

Many of the more selective state flagships as well as some private schools like CMU.
