Industrial engineers in oil refineries

I am a high school senior who is planning on attending Louisiana Tech to get an industrial Engineering degree. IE interest me because I have always enjoyed leadership, improving things, and math/physics. IE seems to be the perfect combination of these things. My math score on the ACT was 29, so I believe I will be able to handle the heavy math in IE. The thing that concerns me about IE is not the work that I will be doing because I know I will enjoy process improvement. I am concerned that I will not be able to find a job in the oil and gas industry, specifically oil refineries. Most of my family works in oil refineries, and the work environment interest me. My brother is currently looking for a chemical engineering job, and when I am helping him look for job openings I have found many job descriptions that exactly match the job of an IE, but since the work is being done in a refinery they want a chemical engineering degree. Are there many industrial engineers working in refineries? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what an IE can do to make theirselves more employable in an oil refinery. I am open to a chemical engineering minor. LaTech would allow me to take UNIT OPERATIONS DESIGN I, II, and III as part of a 21 hour minor. Would this minor be enough to get me a job in a refinery? As someone who has did a lot of research into IE it seems like the refineries really need an IE in some of these positions, based on their descriptions, because IE's are continuous process improvement, LEAN, six sigma, and production scheduling experts, but the refineries want someone who understands their product, such as a ChemE. I do not want to become an IE and get stuck working for FEDEX, Walmart, an airline, or a similar company. Thanks everyone in advance.

Refining is easy compared to the dreaded IE Pallet Stacking Problem

On a more serious note: (a) definitely a Chem E minor would help immensely I would think, (b) enlist family help in getting internships or Co-Ops © think of refinery related Supply Chain Management / Operations etc (d) try to talk to the Petroleum or ChemE departments to get ideas… etc.
