Industrial Engineers in the Oil Industry

Hello, I had some questions regarding engineering degrees in oil and gas. I spent my freshman year as a petroleum engineering major. After a couple of major related classes, I realized that it just doesn't interest me enough. Although, I would still like to work for an oil company. I recently changed my major to Industrial Engineering. Will it be difficult to get a job in the oil industry with an IE degree? Or would I be better of switching to something such as Mech E? My adviser said there are a lot of jobs in the oil industry for IEs, but I feel as if advisers aren't always truthful. It can be like they are trying to sell you a product or something.

I interviewed with one of the big ones and the only thing they looked for IE’s for was supply chain or cost engineer.

What type of work would you like to do in the oil and gas industry?

I remember looking for internships my junior year and talking to all sorts of companies. I won’t name this particular company but one was an oil company, I walk up, hand them my resume, start talking to them, about 45 seconds of him looking over my resume while I’m talking the guy says, “I’m happy to talk to you about the company but I just want to let you know that we’re not going to hire you.” Literally as bluntly as that. And the only time that has ever happened to me. I’m not an idiot so my conclusion is that they have high standards. Just keep that in mind, if you want to work for an oil company, you gotta make sure you put the work in right now.

That is kind of what I’m debating right now. I like some technical work, but its not something I want to spend my whole career doing. I would eventually like to get more into the business side of things or work my way up to a management position.
