Influence of a trustee in admissions?

I’m applying to a top university with stats within range (middle 50%) and all of the other components, but I was wondering how much of an influence can a college trustee have? Even though I have good stats for the school, it is so selective that it is a reach for everyone (and there is a good chance of a rejection due to this). I know a trustee (and that too someone who has donated $10 million to the school), so I was wondering as to how much of an impact this trustee can possibly have with my application.

Thanks!

You’re inquiring about being a “developmental” admit.

“I know a trustee” – sounds like a thin relationship. Unless you were his/her child/grandchild/ward – I think it means nothing to admissions. And you would have had this offer made to you years ago.

Without any more details, I think you’d get an embarrassed but polite “I’ll see what I can do” brush off conversation.

For a trustee relationship to matter, they have to know you pretty well, if not actually be family, and actually be willing to advocate for you. “Knowing” a trustee may not do much.

No yeah my dad has worked with this trustee (my dad has has a pretty good relationship w/ the trustee) and they even said that they would love to help and see what they could do (it wasn’t a reluctant yes)

I’d think that it might garner you at least an extra review of your app but it you’re not qualified it won’t get you in. I mean the connection would send probably an email or letter to the adcom. That would enter your file. They would put your app aside for an additional look. You’d have to also have a great application to tip the scales in your favor.

The top schools have far too many qualified applicants. Even if you’re qualified, it’s not clear that you’d get in. But this might help somewhat.

Just a word to the wise - if you are going to take the trustee up on her/his offer to put in a good word for you, you should be sure it’s your first choice college. Don’t expect the person to go out on a limb if there is a chance you would accept the offer of another college instead.

I can’t hurt especially if you are a qualified candidate in your own right and the donor/trustee knows you well. I absolutely agree that the school should be your top choice before you ask a favor like that. And keep in mind that some trustees/large donors will only support an application if it is ED.

Yea it’s definitely my first choice but I chose EA instead of ED (both offered) because I didn’t want to rule out in-state public schools yet ($$)

Just be sure the trustee/donor knows what your story is upfront (that if the school is affordable, you will attend)

When do decisions come out? If you applied EA, it must be soon, right? There might not be time for the trustee to make a difference.

It’s supposed to come out this week, and my family talked to the trustee about this a few weeks ago. I just remembered to come on CC and ask about it now lol.

@thenewstyped Well, I guess you’ll know soon. Come back and let us know whether or not you got in. Good luck!
