Info about Putney or Blair

Anyone have any information about these two schools, e.g., academic rigor, the culture, which students do well there, which don't, alcohol/drug use, etc.?

Do a search of Blair and you will find plenty of information. I have a son who goes there, so feel free to ask me questions. Blair has a range of students, and it is very rigorous for the high achieving students. The school takes action against drug/alcohol offenders, and it certainly is not pervasive.

We never visited Putney. My impression is that the schools are very different. If you do a search of Putney on the prep school admissions board you will find some information. My impression is that Blair is much more traditional than Putney, and I suspect that it is stronger academically. Putney is known for its arts program, the farm and hands-on learning. hsmomstef's son applied and was accepted at Putney during the last admissions cycle. They visited, so you might find her via a search and pm her with questions.

Feel free to ask me about Blair either here or pm.

I sent you a pm with info about Putney.

i applied to putney and was accepted, but chose NMH instead, like stef's son. it is a fantastic school, but i decided it just wasn't the right fit. if you have any questions feel free to shoot one my way!

Blair still has spots, so I'm applying there. It is a great school that focuses on the individual. Very Good average SAT Score (1850) and also great matriculation.

SAT average is deceptively low due to internationals. Lots of extremely high scores and very individualized college counseling with a focus on what college is the right fit and not just seeing how many the school can get into the top 20!

i almost applied to Blair and my cousin went there and went to Boston College afterwards. the campus is amazing and it is regarded as having a great academic aspect.

hi sunshine,

I’m a guy who is definitely at your position which you stood 2 years ago. I GOT OFFER FROM BOTH PUTNEY AND NMH. Do you think it’s a great idea to choose Nmh?

(I’m a energetic boy from China who’s crazy about sports)

Hope to hear from you soon…

Sincerely
HRY

The Putney School is an excellent school. They focus on having a well-rounded education. You don’t focus on getting perfect grades and GPA. It’s a wonderful school that will teach you how to become a better person, not a better student. Unlike most other boarding schools, Putney is unique. It’s not trying to become the next Exeter or anything, they’re just doing their own thing. Do more research on it and read what the students have to say—they pretty much say all the same thing.

I’m sorry that I don’t know much about Blair. Do the research and you’ll learn much more.

Adding to what I’ve said before: I’d say it’s a good fit for students who wants to try new things and learn with real experience.

The best school for you is the one that best fits you. So as I’ve said previously: research, research, and research. Do a campus visit if possible, too. There’s many unique traits for different schools—find the one that’s right for you, one where you are truly passionate about going and not one that will give you social status.

I’m interested in applying to Putney except that I would be a late application and I would need full financial aid, or close to it. I’ve looked through the website and I am amazed at what it had to offer its students. Do you know what its acceptance rate is and how hard would it be for me to get in as a late applicant? Is it a competitive school?
