In all of my review of schools, I just heard about this program. Is anyone familiar with the arts programs there, the university itself and college life for the kids? Thanks for any help.

not all issues have school advertisements. but when they do, U Mass Dartmouth is in it.
what does this mean?
from line-up of schools that would pay up fee to put ad in ARTnews (with long history and OK circulation but bit of tacky, banal, if not embarrassing side of art magazine) you might able to see some pattern.
in this June 2011 issue, U Mass got 1/4 page graphic in addition to the listing, showing some craft-y artworks and some building’s exterior view.

College of Visaual & Performing Arts
Art Education
Art History

I have only heard U Mass Dartmouth is not strong as public art-art school since MA got Massart, unless you are in state who insists going to university settings.
Who knows, it could be Purchase or New Paltz to NY, or Tyler to PA, depends on your comfort level, it could be your first choice or safety.
If you are open to any settings -stand alone, BFA, BA, state, private etc etc
I would just go visit and compere many apples and many oranges; art-art schools and art programs in all serves U.
some oranges are better than some apples, or vice versa.
some people love apples without ever trying oranges. some only eat green apples, not yellow or red ones.

My daughter and I visited UMass Dartmouth a few years ago. The school seemed to have a very good, well established visual arts program with an emphasis on artisanry. Textile design is one of their specialty programs- and it is a very well respected program. I believe the program may have past (or even present) links with the textile industry in Southeastern Massachusetts. We were told that some of their art classes were given at a campus in New Bedford, a nearby small historic city (known as the “whaling city”,) and that shuttle buses travel there frequently from the No. Dartmouth Campus. I don’t know if that is the case now, a lot of things can change in a few years.

I don’t really know anything about their performing arts programs, but I don’t believe they are well known for this.

The campus is very modernistic looking with a lot of “modern” looking architecture, not at all traditional for a college campus. I recall that they have some nice townhouse residences for upperclassmen and the freshman dorms seemed pretty standard. I am not sure how many out of state students attend, but my guess is that UMass Amherst is more appealing to both instaters and out of staters because of the college town atmosphere. However, the student that toured us was from New Jersey and said she loved the school. My daughter felt that there wasn’t enough going on in the UMass Dartmouth geographic area and opted instead for MassArt and was very happy with that choice. But, she is a self professed “city girl”. I really think that UMass Dartmouth is worth a look, especially if you are interested in one of their specialty programs and if you prefer a school that isn’t enormous. Also, the New Bedford area is pretty interesting and near Cape Cod!

Best of Luck.

Thanks everyone for all the responses.
