Info for prospective Smith Equestrians

Smith College Administration has decided to close their barn after this school year. The current Varsity IHSA team will be changed to a club sport and they need to find an off campus barn to ride out of. This may influence many potential riders decision about applying/attending.

Are you sure they’re closing the barn or is it just changing to a club sport? I applied Ed1 with one of the biggest factors being the barn on campus and I don’t know what to do now.

Yes, they put out a press release 2 days ago. My daughter rides on their IEA team so we got the news yesterday as it affects her as well. I would definitely call the administration and discuss options with them. There is currently a Facebook page with discussions about how to save the barn, but I think a phone call directly to Smith would be your first logical step. I’m very sorry. This is exactly why I posted this. I have a Senior looking at colleges and I know this would influence her decision.

Wow. It’s disheartening to see the equestrians being pushed to the side not just at Smith. What’s the Facebook page? I’ll probably wait to see if I get in before taking any action, but if I do then I’d love to help any way I can. I was hoping to bring my horse to school with me so I wonder what’s going to happen to the barn.

Save smith college equestrian facility and team. That is the name of the Facebook page.

You have to request to follow them!

It’s not Smith’s barn. Never has been. Smith leases the barn from Lori and Jay Quinlan.
Crew has the same arrangement. The current boathouse is leased from Sportsmans Marina. The soon to be built new boathouse will also be leased from Sportsmans Marina

There will be a team.

My understanding is that it is the other way around. Lori and Jay lease the barn from Smith. But either way, the team will be riding at a new location off campus.
