I don’t think two colleges is a good sample size for saying what colleges generally are going to do this year. No way to know yet, and schools are all different, so good luck to all!

OK so Wellesley has started to dip into the WL pool. Should be interesting to see when or if Smith does the same!

My bet is they do! Fingers crossed

I think that since they have not informed people yet that there are probably very few if any spots available, but that is just speculation.

Definitely speculation. A hallmate and good friend of mine at Smith was accepted off the waitlist last year, and she had not heard about it by this point.

Does anyone know if Smith gives fin aid to waitlistees?

I believe they do! In the letter I received back in March with Waitlist FAQs, it said that they will meet the financial need (as indicated by the fafsa, I’m guesing,) of those accepted off of the waitlist. Yay! :)

Kishmish has it right. They absolutely do give financial aid to waitlistees who have applied for it. This will be the need-based aid and not the merit aid, of course, but it will be aid nonetheless.

A friend of D’s who got in off the waitlist received outstanding financial aid.

My daughter was accepted off the wait list last year. She heard in mid-May. Her FA at Smith was comparable to her MOHO regular decision FA.

Does anyone know if the waitlist is ranked or if there is anything you can say or do to show you’re still interested? I’m very bummed that I was waitlisted. My last semester has been fantastic. I’ve been on the High Honor Roll all year and have exempted out of most of my finals. I don’t know if I should say anything to them. I don’t want to be annoying.

Absolutely you should say something. If you can honestly say you’d attend Smith if you got in, say that, too. Have your guidance counselor send an academic update.

You can definitely send a letter emphasizing your strong interest and also ask your guidance counselor to send something. You can also send another recommendation if there’s someone you think can add something to what’s already been said. If you’ve won any awards since you sent in your application or gotten any new test scores back, you can send that too.

This is not the time to worry about annoying. It’s the time for people to have the best relevant information to make a decision about you vis a vis the waitlist. Definitely, an “If I am admitted, I will attend” statement is in order as well as the academic updates.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the waitlist is not ranked, but you can definitely boost your chances of getting in off it by following the advice of the three posters above me! :)

In my wait list packet, they stated that the wait list is not ranked. I am so curious as to if/when people will begin to hear from Smith. I believe I read somewhere that the yield this year is about 2% less than usual–and they accepted 86 off the waitlist last year…so perhaps more waitlistees this year? Who knows, but good luck to us all!

I did not receive a waiting list “packet,” only the decision on line and the ability to check to stay on the waiting list (which I didn’t do right away). My admission account has no information on it. I hope that doesn’t mean they’re done.

A friend of mine said this was on the choice blog of NY Times TODAY.

Smith College — 34 percent of this year’s admitted applicants said yes, compared to 36 percent last year, for a freshman class of 630 so far; 23 have been admitted from waiting list, with 25 more likely, according to the college.

I think that article is actually from 2009. I wish it was talking about this year!

Boo! I thought it was this year’s.
