Info on the Waiting List

Although the waitlist is not ranked, waitlisted students with characteristice mirroring those of the students who declined admission are often among the first to get admissions offers. So, if three volleyball payers declined and you’re an outside-middle hitter, chances are good that you’ll get an offer. Likewise, if the first-chair oflute graduated and two incoming flautists declined.

I talked to an admission counselor today, and she said they were not sure yet if they are going to go to their waitlist, but if they do it will only be a few students since they got a “healthy” response from their rd women. She also said that we should know within the next two weeks.

That’s what I was afraid of just based on anecdotal information. Seems like a big class is coming in after all. Should be interesting.

Edit, seeing the same thing over at the Mount Holyoke board. They say housing is going to be tight this year.

Also kind of interesting that only Wellesley has gone to the waitlist( of The Sisters.)

Wellesley got burned badly last year with a much higher matriculation rate than normal, leading to a class more than 60 students higher than planned and some in the upper classes being housed at another college a few miles away first semester. They adjusted their admission numbers this year with the expectation that they’d undershoot and then go to the wait list.

Heard that the yield this year was particularly high at Smith, so probab little movement on the wait-list. Smith may have to tweak its numbers as Wellesley did.

I have spoken to both MHC where I am a Spring Entrant and Smith where I am on the wait list. Both schools told me they are currently experiencing a higher than expected yield. I asked Smith about sending extra information re grades and recommendations and she responded to other questions in my email but not that one.

I’ve heard a lot of schools, even SUNYs, aren’t going to the wait list this year. Big disappointments.

Ready2011, go ahead and send the extra information (grades, recs) and if you would jump at the chance go to Smith if you were accepted, tell them that. Good luck!

ready2011 do you mind posting your questions & answers about the waitlist from Smith ?

Sorry we’ve done so much to improve the yield.

Got the letter today. They’re not going to the wait list this year. :(

Got the letter yesterday. Wait list officially closed. No one was accepted off.

But what about “summer melt”? I am acquainted with one applicant, admitted to the class of 2015, who went ahead and paid her deposit to Smith and then was accepted off the wait list at another college. She chose the other college (and presumably informed Smith.) This is not news; it happens every year. Is this class so over-enrolled that the admissions office is certain about not needing the wait list?

It has been stated within this forum that Smith College’s yield for the Class of 2015 was
unusally high this year. It has been reported that over 700 students who were accepted into the Class of 2015 deposited. The target size for the incoming class has historically been 640-650. Even with “summer melt” it would appear unlikely that class size would reduce to a point where additional students would be contacted. That would appear to support the decision that the Smith College Admission Office made to close the wait list for this year.
