Info wanted: Ursinus, Wilson, Russell Sage

If anyone has info on Ursinus, Wilson, or Russell Sage -- even if it's just what the campuses look like -- I'd appreciate it.

Russell Sage in particular has been in contact with me many times over the past 6 months or so, but I still can't find out much about them. I'm going to be visiting some other New York schools this October and might swing by.

I know Wilson is affiliated, but does anyone know how prevalent religious influence is on campus?

I really like what I've been reading about Ursinus. It's fairly close to Philadelphia, right?

Ursinus is in Collegeville- I am very familiar with the area. It is a small but pretty campus. Collegeville is not that close to Phila. You would need to get to King of Prussia or Valley Forge and take a bus or train. Having a car would be a real plus, but the traffic on the expressway into town is usually horrible. Collegeville is a pretty distant suburb, actually. It is a beautiful area. The King of Prussia mall is huge and is about 15 minutes away. Valley Forge Park is also about 15 minutes away.

Just a word of caution--you have to take everything here with a grain of salt, as it's subjective information and we all have our biases.

I mention that in particular because of Russell Sage. I've found that more than a few people have a strong bias against women's colleges here.

Thank you! I actually stayed in Valley Forge/King of Prussia in October, so I know the area fairly well. It's pretty down there.

Their guide book said it's 25 minutes (or was it miles?) from Philadelphia, but I guess I should've learned by now not to believe the guide books. :) I'd actually like it to be fairly outside the city, so that works for me. I don't drive, but I'm sure someone else on campus could give me a ride to the train station when the urge to come home hits.

I really wish I'd known about some colleges when we were doing a road trip through Pennsylvania in October. We did drive through Gettysburg's campus, though we didn't actually tour it. I wish I'd seen Dickinson and now Ursinus. Note to other families: If you're going on vacation, research area schools!

hoedown: I'm very much in favor of women's education, especially supporting smaller schools. I know better than to listen to everything I'm told here. ;)

If anything, the biggest criticism of Russell Sage on this board will be that it's not selective enough. It also has a large commuter/adult student population, which would make some people here not even consider a particular school. I'm more interested in schools being personal matches, not statistical ones, so I'm good at ignoring it when people knock any schools that aren't Harvard or Williams.

Wilson is also a women's college, and apparently a fairly good sized one. I just got their course catalogue in the mail today, and it's intriguing me so far.

My step-sister-in-law is dean of the faculty and head of the accounting department at Ursinus. It is a pre-med factory, with better overall results than most of the Ivies, and in large numbers. It is also well-known for its Communications (journalism, etc.) Department, with large numbers of interns (more than anywhere but Annenberg at Penn) in the Philadelphia-area media community. Don't know much more.

I'd be going for an English/history focus. (Specifically, I'd like to individualize my major.) Their course listings seem to meet my needs. Still, I would hope they don't put all of their resources into pre-med and communications. I'll have to look at the strength of the other departments. Thank you!
