Input on chances for son for engineering schools

Great site, glad I found it. Working through the reality phase with my senior that is wanting to look at east coast and west coast schools (interested in mechanical), but a bit of mixed bag as he has drifted a bit in his focus and putting appropriate study time in. He attends a tough, competitive Dallas-area suburban high school. Taken a solid mix of Pre-AP and AP classes, but has tended to make Bs or low As in them. Made a 3 on both of his History AP tests.
ECs are ok, with Vice President of TSA for two years, competing and winning several regional and a national VEXX robotics and First Robotics competitions. Works at a patent development firm part time doing CAD drawings and computer animations.
SAT: 1850 630M 680R 540W ACT: 28 Composite
Weighted GPA is 4.05 I believe the unweighted is right at 3.5

Finances are a non-issue, and I think we have crossed the "I am now serious about it chasm", he seems committed to ME major, BUT still have a concern as the investor here about a $35K tuition bill for his freshman year if we really have not kicked into studying high gear yet!

His list right now is:
Cal Poly
UC - San Diego
Georgia Tech
Penn State
Texas A&M (my alma matter)
NC State (safety)
Colorado State (safety)

Interested in input on the top 5.

Also - have you guys found a website where you can plug in weighted and unweighted GPAs along with test scores and it gives back fairly accurate "chances" results? I signed up for the US News subscription and cant get the Compass function to work.
