I chose to write about the importance of diversity and inclusion in my essay. In my rural community in Appalachia, there is little room for acceptance of new ideas, those of other races/ethnicities, sexual preference, and political leanings. I genuinely believe I want to contribute to changing these ideals in my area, and I wrote in my essay about the desire I have to branch out from my conservative town and area. I have attended workshops where I chose to study diversity and leadership and it was life changing and eye-opening. In my essay, I highlighted how those experiences shaped me and how I plan to contribute to the school I am applying to, by being open minded and educated on diversity and inclusion. I am very different from those in my school and community and although I appreciate the community I live in, and the experiences I have had, I desire to move on and make a real change. I hope to advocate for something bigger than myself. I am a white, straight female. I do understand that I have no room to elaborate on personal experiences, but I do believe that because I am so dedicated to becoming educated about the importance of diversity, it makes me an outstanding candidate for a university.
