Our son is deciding between his top final choices and I'm here seeking any and all input on U Denver and the College of Saint Rose. He's interested in music technology and commercial music; he also composes for acoustic and electronic instruments. He's a decent jazz sax player, but has little interest in performing -- he's more of a 'behind the scenes' person, though more interested in making music than merely recording it. He attends a very diverse, liberal urban high school, and would hate a square, conservative atmosphere.

For a host of reasons, he's now choosing between Lamont's BM in Recording+Technology and the Saint Rose Music Industry program (a BS). Both have offered respectable merit aid.

I asked for input here four years ago when our first was making her final decision, and what I learned was very helpful, so I thank you in advance for sharing your expertise.

My son was choosing between St. Rose and UMass Lowell. We really liked Saint Rose. Sister Mary Ann is awesome. (And I believe he would have enjoyed the 2:1 ratio of girls to boys). However he went to UML because the technology was stronger there. Had he been more interested in the commercial aspects, he would probably have chosen St. Rose. I don’t know the Lamont program so I won’t comment. But what I am getting at is he has to look at the respective curricula and decide which school has more of what he wants.

A good friend’s son graduated last Spring from the Music Industry program and he does have a full time job with the company he interned with while at St Rose. He basically is responsible to run the sound boards, set up and break down the sound equipment at music festivals. He has worked 20 hours a day for weekend festivals. He loved his time at St Rose but, as Geo1113 recommended, compare the 2 programs and see which one more closely matches your son’s interests.

Though we didn’t end up choosing Lamont, son was very very very impressed with them. Only ended up not going there because even after a huge scholarship it was still too much for us.( we are very broke) The faculty there is genuinely interested in their students’ success and S actually still stays in touch with one of the professors there. If a big cloud o’ money rained some down on us, S would go there in a second!!!
