Hey guys, sorry if the title is misleading, but I'm the one who needs the inside scoop. I applied ED to Upenn, but if I don't get in(which is probable), I'm extremely interested in Duke(though my chances tend to be slim again). Anyway, I've never visisted the campus but I've spoken to some graduates and it seems like such a warm environment. I'm trying to write my supplement essay but i don't know like where kids hang out on campus, what's the union called, what are the streets surrounding duke called, what schools are Duke's main rivals, i guess fro basketball and others, and that kind of info.

Someone please answer, I'm in dire need!!! thanks

To be honest, if you don't even know about the Duke-UNC rivalry, you probably don't know very much about the school at all. Which is not a bad thing - I'll admit, I didn't know a thing about Duke and never even visited here until after I was accepted and thinking about attending. But my suggestion is that if you want to have a good essay filled with "inside info" about the school and things that make it interesting to you, you should come visit and find those things out for yourself. Walk around the campus, see what's on Ninth Street, visit Cameron, eat in the Bryan Center at Dillo. Even watch a few Duke basketball games on TV - watch the insanity of the student section, especially (you don't know how much fun it is until you've been in it). You'll get a feel for it much faster by doing that than you would just reading what other people have to say on a forum.

Although, I remember not thinking the Marketplace was all that bad when I visited. I think it's the redundancy of having the same meal every single day that gets to everyone pretty quickly......

Eh. I waste so many of my "all you can eat" meals (that we pay about 10 bucks for while I feel like I only eat at most $5 worth) by skipping breakfasts and occasional dinners if I order on points or make mac & cheese. The freshman meal plan doesn't make sense at all for me.

Don't diss the Marketplace. Compared to other universities' dining halls, the Marketplace is relatively good (plus music). It also seems to be the norm for the Marketplace to be the upperclassmen grocery store.

I don't think breakfast is $10, but yeah, I know what you mean. I always felt like I had to eat a lot to get my money's worth. Suffices to say, I never missed a single breakfast my whole freshman year. Yeah, I'm a freak.

but yeah, as a whole, Duke's dining system is miles ahead of many other schools'.

I used to be that way, but then I started going to bed at 3:30 in the morning. That put an end to getting up with any time to spare before class. :p

Visiting the campus does make a difference in the way you percieve a college, especially if it's a fantastic day and there's just been a home basketball game (and, consequently, all wooden benches have been burned...). The atmosphere is certainly incredible.

Since you're not applying ED to Duke, there's not as much pressure to visit and whatnot. Just be honest about what drew you to Duke and you'll be fine. There's no need to be an expert. That's what admissions people are for.

i've been to 0 breakfasts because, um, I made a personal choice in my life to not eat it? And I like sleep. I'm in class during lunch. Basically I lose all that money.

Anyway, warblersrule...the marketplace isn't just a grocery store for upperclassmen! If you ever see someone discreetly (or not) running out of the marketplace with desserts it's probably me. Stop and say hi:)
