I lived in California from '98 to '10. I acquired my citizenship in '09. Now, I presently live in India as a long term temporary resident. Suppose me and my family move back to California, and then I study at a community college for 2 years (say, De Anza). If I transfer to any UC or CSU, would I be counted as an instate resident? My parents do pay taxes there, but we don't own a house.

come on cant anyone help?

you should qualify for resident if you live there for a year or more. but i think they state that you can’t be moving to california just for the purpose of going to school. how they determine that i do not know. but i lived in california my whole life and moved to texas 3 years ago. the head of admissions at berkeley said i would qualify for residency after being back in california for a year because since i lived there before they wouldn’t say i was just moving there for school. i would just be going back home to cali. also, the UCs have a loophole. if you go to a california HS for 3 years (9th grade can be counted) and graduate (or get a GED or CHSPE) from there and apply for admission to a UC after 2002, then you will always be considered a california resident. so i don’t even have to wait a year to be considered a resident.

here’s the link to the info: [UC Tuition Exemption for California High School Students, Office of the Registrar](<a href=“404 - Page Not Found”>404 - Page Not Found)

You need to call the schools and explain your situation personally; we cannot help you with that here as it is a specific situation and there isn’t very clear information regarding “residency” as its parameters are defined.

I will be living there after I finish school, so it’s not just for school.

Would this help?
