Instate tuition fees

Hi guys!
So two years ago I’ve received my PR card and now it’s time for me to enter University! I’ve chosen Uni of Michigan Dearborn and it has the same requirements for instate tuition as Uni of Michigan AA… I’ve been considered as an out of state student… Problem is I’ve been living outside the US (overseas) in Kuwait for the past two years (basically my whole life) and visited the US 3 times after getting my PR… So basically whenever I apply to any University they would consider me as an out of state student! I’ve graduated from a high school outside of Michigan (in Kuwait), I’ve got some far relatives who live in Michigan… is there any hope that they would accept my petition to be considered for instate tuition? Even after a year of spending it in Umich dearborn?
Thanks!

Highly doubtful. Have you read through this page: http://ro.umich.edu/resreg.php? How would you demonstrate that Michigan is your perm. legal residence? I’ve heard it’s really, really hard to get it changed to in state after the out of state determination is made.

There are 3 ways to get in state tuition status, but I don’t see you qualify by any of them.

So basically if I don’t get to be considered instate for the first year, I won’t be for the next three years? A bit disappointing to be honest…

@7asooonnn Think about it this way. What did you or your family contribute to Michigan that they should grant you in state tuition rate? The year(s) you enrolled in college does not count for resident requirement.

What I went to grad school I was considered OOS because I worked for a OOS company (!), despite living in MIchigan and paying Michigan taxes. It took a few months and lots of paperwork to correct that. You could establish residency by working in Michigan prior to entering school for a year or so as long as you are financially independent. It might be worth it to save $70K in tuition.
