Instructor did not cover required material

I have run into a problem. I took a class this past spring and unfortunately the required material was not covered. I passed the class with an A but I feel that not having covered all of the required material will put me at a disadvantage for the next class(es) in the sequence. Here's an analogy to compare it to: Imagine in a calculus class that you spend half of the semester doing pre-calc review, the other half studying limits, and a few days at the end you study the definition of a derivative. Then your next calculus class is a continuation of full-fledged integral calculus. That won't be so easy if you barely know what a derivative is.

What should you do if the instructor did not cover the required material? Is it my problem now? How do you handle this? I have talked to people who have taken this class before with different instructors and they say we only got half as far as we were supposed to. I even looked at the syllabus for the class: We only studied half of the material on the objectives. I took a peek at the upcoming material for the next class and it makes assumptions we never got to, so...

Granted, this was the instructor's first time ever teaching the class, but I don't know what to do. Do I retake the class?

Uh, you might be able to audit/sit in on the class if you don’t want to pay to take it again. Or you could self study from a textbook or online lectures or something.

You might want to file a complaint about the lack of teaching though, so other students don’t suffer a similar fate.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, such are some college experiences. A great professor will plan his/her syllabus to make sure all important aspects are covered. However, there are some bad apples that will have excuses for not getting the materials completed or just plainly ignoring them hoping students are not that smart to know the difference.
At this point, you can file a unanimous complain to the department chair or dean, but the burden is solely on you now to us this holiday and get to speed through self studying or tutor.

Best of luck to you.
