We also have NSSI for D and have been very happy with the way they handle claims and their service in general. I just wonder if they will drop us now that we have had a claim.

We have NSSI also, but have yet to make a claim. I am wondering how rates would be impacted once you file one. Anyone have experience with that? I was told they will cover the student anywhere they are living during the policy period, and that you can extend the coverage for up to 3 years post grad. I like the accidental damage and theft coverage, as well as the low deductible. I have not compared pricing to CSi, which may be less expensive. I think we pay about $170 for $6000 coverage. The price has been stable for 3 years.

Many colleges send flyers with offers for dorm insurance. Our kids have only had junky stuff and laptops (covered with accidental policy), always with them or locked in room. So we did not get the coverage.

My son has a pricey sax, and we’ve had that on its own waiver since he traveled to Europe with it a few summers ago. I think it’s under $40/yr.

I covered D’s things under College Student Insurance (CSI) this year and I am glad we did. Her Blackberry was stolen while on a trip. She filed a police report and CSI sent her a check for the complete amount right away. For her, a $5000 policy with a $25 deductible cost $126/yr. They cover everything from cracked computer screens to water damage from a dropped cell phone. . . and more. They even cover university-owned equipment in the care of a student.

I don’t know about NSSI, but the premium rates for CSI didn’t change at all following a claim. We filed one her freshman year, and each subsequent year was the same premium.

CSI all the way. My son accidentally dropped his laptop, and CSI covered all the repairs except of course for the deductible. We had already sent in the laptop to the manufacturer since we were hoping the warranty on the laptop would cover the repairs (it did not) and CSI allowed us to keep the laptop with the manufacturer and paid the amount for the repairs. They were very easy to deal with and my son had the check in a few days. Also, the insurance with CSI also covers the student while they are traveling to school, as well as at school.
