Insurance for Summer Internship in Africa?

As part of her degree, D is going to Uganda this summer for a 6-8 week (unpaid) internship with an NGO. We'll pay for her airfare, local housing/meal costs, spending money, shots, -- and $3000 for the cost of the required summer school class she has to pay for in order to get credit that she needs towards this degree requirement.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or thoughts as to the best way to insure this trip. Any gotchas folks have experienced with this kind of situation?

Get an “International Volunteer Card” - IVC. We require them of all individuals working with our organization in Africa and Asia. Look them up on the web. (and it is inexpensive - $45/year.)

Thanks, Mini – I hadn’t heard of that one.

Also look into [College Student Insurance (CSI)](http://www.collegestudentinsurance.com/) for property insurance.

Rates vary depending on deductibles & the amount insured, but the premiums are a lot less than the cost of replacing a computer, etc.

IVC covers all personal effects up to $2k.

[IVC Volunteer Card - Travel Insurance](http://www.volunteercard.com/insurance.php)

When I spent time in Africa, I had medical evacuation insurance (which specifically included airlift evacuation to the hospital of my choice) as a feature of my health insurance. I don’t remember the details- long time ago- but I thought it was a good idea at the time and I know I didn’t have a huge amount of money then so I guess it was reasonable.

IVC has $500,000 for medical evac., (and $25,000 for repatriation of remains, uh…)
