Up until now we have gotten riders for all the instruments on the homeowners for theft and loss. BUT we do think we need to get DS's instruments insured under a separate policy. Any suggestions?? You can either post here or PM me. Thanks.

I would look into renters insurance-and include compter.

thumper1- You're probably aware that if the instrument(s) are used professionally at all, the homeowner's policy insurance supplemental rider will not pay a claim. Don't ask me why other than it's probably just another way for the insurance companies to put you in a higher risk class.

If son is a member of AFM (American Federation of Musicians), there is coverage available as a union benefit. I don't know the carrier, and I'm not a union member so I can't access the website. Membership in ASCAP or the music education professional associations (ASTA, MENC or MTNA) also have what I believe are special rates for members. I'm sure the brass associations have similar benefits.

I believe special rates are also available for members of Chamber Music America, as well as to members of the American Viola Society.

Clarion (http://www.clarionins.com/) is the one we've found that most recommend at least within the string community.

Heritage and Merz-Huber are other well known companies.

Additional thought: many of these same organizations offer group medical coverage as well. Something to consider as our kids graduate and fall off the family health umbrella.

We have All-State auto and home-owner's insurance, and we were able to declare S's instruments as part of professional pursuit (at the time he was a music major in NYC) and still pay a reasonable supplementary fee. Various professional organizations offer policies, too. Good luck. Lorelei

Right now we are insuring as Lorelei is. DS is a member if International Trumpet Guild. I wonder if they have insurance. We'll have him check.

We also use Clarion for most of our instruments.

Bassdad....what is Clarion?

thumper- Clarion is one of the three better known music instrument insurance companies. A link is in my earlier post above.

Heritage here

Thanks for the link to Clarion. I will have DS look into this for his instruments. It sounds like what he should have at this point.

This is only for students. It is what we currently have on S's horns, and his laptop. I know you're looking for professional coverage, Thumper. I'm just putting it here for any students (or their parents) looking here for insurance info. He got official appraisals for both horns, and the company has those on file.

My husband has had a policy for decades through the American Federation of Musicians. Relatively inexpensive coverage for all risks.

Son has also been an AFofM member for 2 years now. "His" instruments up till now have been purchased and insured by his father on his policy.
Son just now has purchased his first horn (used F tuba) on his own and in his name. Might be time to sort out all the stuff and reassign to 2 separate policies.
