whats the integrated bio major like in l&s? i just got accepted by ucb as a freshman, planning to do a phd research in bio, the more basic/ more acad research stuff, though not sure which field exactly yet. so just trying to find out more about the major..............

are the courses very demanding? is it even possible for 4.0? what are the research opportunities like for the major?

how are the profs/ gsi like?

another thing, is it possible to do mcb double major? or is it suicidal? =xxx

just basically trying to find out more........will post more qns later on.........

IB is a very broad department; the IB major is as specialized as you want to make it.

Straight off the IB website, they say it better than I can

A 4.0 is possible, the departmental average is 3.34 though. Some IB courses are really easy (like 131 and 132), but some are really hard (like C142, C185 and others).

An MCB double major in the past as been possible, but because they just reorganized the MCB emphases and elective lists I cannot say anything about the future until the new elective lists are actually put up. MCB is a much harder major than IB. The departmental average is about 2.96.

Come to the IB table at Cal Day (I will be volunteering there from 9AM to 11AM)

wow. ok. hmmm, the thing is i’m not too sure if i can attend cal day since i’m oos. which is why i’m trying to gather as much information as i can now. (when is cal day btw? i’ll try to see if i can attend the sessions.) what are you majoring in leftist?

anw, a few more qns that i’m conncerned abt.
how strong is the IB department really?

2) are there any research opportunities in the department? also, was wondering how are the profs/ gsi like? read from other threads that some profs are rather aloof and don’t even recognise their students in class…is this really true? horrors

3) and of course since i’m thinking of going to grad school, can i apply for berkeley’s grad school when i graduate, or is this strictly prohibited?

4) lastly, is there a possibility to accelerate my undergrad into 3 yrs instead of the usual 4yrs?

doubling on ib and mole tox is easy. getting a 4.0? hmmmmmmmmmm i just wonder if anybody can! seriously read the forums lol.

also, if you are serious about planning to pursue a phd, it is better to take mcb. ib is such a broad department like leftists said. it is really difficult to be a candidate if you’re studying dinosaurs and animal behavior.

mcb (especially bmb) is so much more specialized and is and will be at the forefront of science for at least the next ten years.
