Integrating Electrical and Biomedical Engineering at Boston University

I’m considering applying to BU for regular decision this fall. I want to enter undergrad as an EE major, but I want to specialize is biomedical as the years progress. I understand that BU has a well-renowned BME program. Are there any opportunities/programs at BU that allow me to learn about the medical field while studying EE? And in general, do you have any advice on continuing along this path in terms of internships/research, courses, future planning, etc? It’s not set in stone, and I want to keep my mind open, but I really do have a passion for this field. Thanks in advance for any help!

As an ENG student at BU, you can double major in both EE and BME, but that is highly discouraged. If you are really interested in BME, you should focus a lot of your time in that. There are still courses that intersect with EE, such as Electric Circuit Theory, but in general EE and BME are on opposite ends of the spectrum. There are mixed feelings about majoring in two things that are very different. On one end people (job interviewers) will say that you are very diverse and know a lot. However, some people may even say that you are indecisive and you are not specialized in one specific thing. That can be kind of unhelpful. Its similar to double majoring in BME and CE (Computer Engineering) and going in for a CE interview. They are going to have no use for a BME major. However, the BME side may have use some basic CE knowledge. It is basically a matter of how much time you want to spend on each major or field. Like I said before, BME and EE rarely interest which means you will have to take a lot of courses (I MEAN A LOT) which you may or may not be able to complete in four years. The BU staff will talk a lot about double majoring, but in ENG it is only realistic in majors that overlap, like EE and CE. Otherwise, it is nearly impossible.
